Hbo has had a good track record on producing their own Miniseries since the Nineties, starting with "Positive Singing" back in 1995. Carnivale is a remarkable look back at not only the United States emerging from the great Depression, but life during the dust bowl in the south. As a baby boomer, and a historian myself, I found the portrayal of the characters that traveled with the Carnival from town to town and state to state both sympathetic as well as perfect examples of those struggling to make sense of not only their lives but the circumstances that forced them to make a living on the road. I recommend this miniseries for anyone interested in American History and life through the Great Depression of the 30's. The struggles that this group of nomads is a marvelous looking glass into our history and sensibilities to those less fortunate. It is the typical good versus evil story that plays out in the lives of characters that could very well have been our neighbors, our friends and even ourselves. The miniseries was only two seasons long and will be missed by many of us that looked forwarded to additional seasons chronicling the lives of these very colorful cast of characters. Carnivale, as was Six FeeT Under, The Sopranos, and OZ has filled our lives and minds with images that maybe we have not been exposed to, but under different circumstances could have been us!!Read full review
Although Carnivale was an HBO miniseries that met a sudden cancellation that only led to two seasons total, my family and I found it very interesting We really liked the fact that the series was a smooth blend of unusual material and excellent acting and cinematography. It's very difficult to find just the right combination of those two features these days! We decided to purchase the DVDs because our local library had the 1st season,, which me happened to rent and truly enjoyed. When we sought the 2nd season at the library, it turned out that although the library did have the 2nd season, someone had rented it out months previous to our inquiry and never returned it!! Of course, our family was not going to let the situation end there. My husband and I decided to go to E-bay and find the 2nd set, and there it was! We purchased it, watched it and donated to out library, so there would once again be a Carnivale 2nd season DVD set for all to rent and view!!! Thanks a bunch to all!Read full review
First off I can not give a high enough recommendation for this fine series, both Season 1 and 2. It is a wonderful story that almost demands home view, where scenes can be watched time and time again to grasp what is going on. My wife and I have watched the entire series several times, end to end and awe both still delight in new finds. I disagree that the series was cancelled though. There was no 3rd season because there was no need for a 3rd season. The story was told, there was no more to be said. Good and evil had clashed, no decisive victory was achieved, and the struggle will continue. There has always been good and evil, they will always come together and clash, and they will both retreat wounded, but there will never be resolution. The story goes on unchanged, there is no need for us to watch further. Now that we understand what is going on, who is who and what role they play, then further seasons would just be boring.Read full review
This movie is a very intense and mind boggling one. You learn of man and god, but not in a religious aspect, more in the mind of man. A healer of pain and death, Ben Hawkins troubled past led him to a chain gang, only somehow he escaped and was picked up by the carnival. This carnival is unique, and the characters just as unique, with a being named management, ever so mysterious, plucking at the strings. One also learns of a man named Tailor, a preacher, who throughout the season you see change, until finally in an encompassing climax Justin finds out who he really is..
The product was bought as a Christmas present for my son. He already had season one of this program and had shown it to me so I was familiar with the series. He had mentioned that he would love to have the second season but that it was pretty pricy. Well, it was a little pricy but not for a loving mother at Christmas. It arrived as advertised, still packaged in cellaphane and I have not had a report from my son on the quality since he took it home - don't know if he has watched it yet. I do know that ordering online is a lot easier than fighting the crowds in the stores, which I hate. I bought at least half of Christmas this year on line. The only items I did not buy on line were clothes and purses for my granddaughters. All in all, it was a very good experience.
