Let me begin by saying that, in my opinion, Dennis Lehane is one of the finest writers of our time. I consider him among my favorites seeing as his brutal honesty and realistic style of writing is one that has stuck with me since I read his first novel (A Drink Before The War). I also love it because all of his writing takes place in areas where I grew up in Massachusetts and I love being able to picture the locations he speaks of exactly as they are. Makes for a very concrete story. I find myself very drawn to his characters and I can see a lot of myself in the way they are and their personalities. The Given Day is one of his shining examples of excellent writing. He mixes in fiction with real people, places and events in American history. I have rarely encountered such a mastermind of craftsmanship in literature as this. Taking place in Boston at the beginning of the 1900's, The Given Day follows the story of two different individuals and their struggle to survive in a new America. Their stories and journeys happen to coincide about half way through the story and they form a bond like no other. Subsequently, the book talks about and follows Babe Ruth in his final days as a member of The Boston Red Sox and also coincides his story with those characters which are the main focus. This book is definitely one of those that cannot be put down and should certainly be picked up and read by all who want to read something different, something powerful and something very unforgettable. The Given Day is one of the best books I have ever read and makes Lehane take place among those such as Hunter S. Thompson, Stephen King and the like. He gets better and better each book and is also responsible for Mystic River, Shutter Island and the Kensey & Genero 6 book series. He also has a book of short stories and a play he wrote. His most recent work is the sequel to The Given Day entitled Live By Night which is also a must along with all of his workRead full review

This historical novel by Dennis Lehane is very good. It moves very rapidly and is hard to put down once you start reading. A great look at an interesting period of Boston and American history. Story telling at its very best. Far better than most books written about the beginning of the 20th Century in NE. I would recommend this for anyone.
A brutal, yet touching, look at the Unitied States in the early 20th century. Anarchy, corruption, and the battle between the classes are a backdrop for the drama of a family at war with itself. History buffs will enjoy this book. Dennis Lehave fans will love it. On a tie with Mystic River as his best book.
