What a great series & what a true misfortune for action/drama/thriller lovers everywhere that Stieg Larsson only finished 3 of his projected 10 volumes. He died shortly after submitting the first 3 for publication... but after the reader enters Larsson's world with this taut debut episode, it is easy to subscribe to the conspiracy theories that Scandinavian neo-Nazis, or mafia, or both assassinated him. The English translation in all 3 books is excellent. Unfamiliar with Sweden? Arm yourself with a modestly detailed map of the country and the pages from a travel guide dealing with pronunciation and currency conversion - you'll be so glad you did, you'll wonder why the publisher hasn't included this info as appendices. Do NOT read these out of order, as the sequels each reference their precursors and basically will spoil them for you. Otherwise, be prepared to soon join the masses clamoring for the Larsson heirs to let Stieg's longtime paramour/collaboator at least finish the 4th volume if not the entire outlined series!!!!! Yes, they're that good!!!!!!!!Read full review
It's rare for me to read a book after I've seen the movie, but this is one of those exceptions. I was drawn to the films and now books after reading several articles about the author who tragically died in 2004 at age 49 just after submitting his trilogy of books to be published. He didn't live to see the worldwide phenomenal success of his work that, in my opinion, is absolutely deserved. I fell in love with the two lead characters, researcher Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist: their intelligence, morality, courage and, in Lisbeth's case, her quirky, no-apology style of individualism. I also found it interesting to live alongside the main characters in Sweden, a country I know little about. The story is excellent with just enough intrigue, mystery and relationship building. In hindsight, the movie was astonishingly true to the book, also a rarity.Read full review
This book is a very good story about an adventurous girl who risks her life to reveal the wrongdoings of many ; especially people who were ivolved in her life that made her experience tortured . This is not just a good book to read , but great mental excercise that has you constantly stopping and reanalyzing the passages that you read . I would recommend this book to all for it's subject matter as well as a good goal for someone who wants to get back into reading . Sincerely , Gary K. Smith
I HAVE NOW RE-READ THIS BOOK, 1ST OF SERIES, 4 TIMES. EVERYTIME I DO SO I COME UP WITH A NEW THEORY ABOUT SALANDER, ABOUT STEIG LARSSON, ABOUT EVA GABRIELSSON (LARSSON'S LIFE PARTNER)AND AM AMAZED BY THE SWEDISH SOCITIES LACK OF TRANSPARENCY. THIS BOOK HAS NOT ONLY LED ME TO READ THE OTHER 2 INSTALLMENTS (MAYBE MORE???) BUT ALSO TO SEEK OUT OTHER SWEDISH AUTHORS AND BOOKS ABOUT SWEDEN'S HISTORY FROM THE 1800'S TO PRESENT. SALANDER AS A PERSON, WOMAN AND CHARACTER NOT ONLY TOUCHES A RAW NERVE IN ME BUT I CANNOT IMAGINE ANOTHER WOMAN CHARACTER WHICH SUCH A POSITIVE EFFECT ON ME IN MY LIFETIME. (NEVER SAY NEVER)
Best friend discussed the author and his work. I totally agree it is a page turner and was truly hooked once I got the characters in place. I love how he told several stories at once and kept you updated with everything.Delightful and yet so insightful into the cruelty of life with insanity. So many excellent points to ponder as the characters make decisions. I loved how he brought in history and current events as well. I honesty kept the midnight oil burning more than once reading this book and have a list of friends waiting to borrow it. Thanks Ebay I got the book on the mystery Friday items. jansons09
