Just finished. Exciting, always interesting; a lot of characters, individually explained after they have established themselves in story; unexpected surprises including John Sommers relation to Eliza, the heroine. 1849 Gold Rush, involved other country than North America; it's neighbor South America. If this is a fictionalized part in the California gold rush I do not know. Mexico was involved because it lost, California to America, after war of 1812. Liza's pursuit of her lover is the main thread of the book. He had gone to California to become rich and return to Chile for her. Reader will not know until very end of the book. On the journey Liza took to reach California, there's many challenges she deals with in order to find her lover (boy friend). It reminded me somewhat of the style that Pearl S. Buck used in her classic book "The Good Earth." I liked the book and purchased it mainly because it was historical fiction. I give it an A+; recommend it. Worth the time spent reading it.Read full review
