For what it sets out to accomplish, on a scale of 1 to 10, Hot Fuzz, the comedy from the guys who gave us Shaun of the Dead wraps in at about a 22. In fact, setting all saturated British humor influences and Action Movie parodying aside; this movie is simply a good old fashioned blast. You'd have to be a scrooge at heart not to enjoy this movie. The premise is pretty simple. You have a hot-shot star police officer who at the same time comes across as being a bit of a goof-ball with a poker face. The movie opens brilliantly with many extended cuts and stylish edits, meant intentionally to mimic and parody most American action films of the last 20 years or so. The officer is transferred to a seemingly honest small English town where everyone knows each other and who appeared out of some skit that would feel right at home in a Monty Python movie. The cops of the town have doubts that any funny business goes on, but our hero is bent on fighting crime and destroying whatever indecency exists. While being paired up with a lovably dumb and slightly over-weight partner, he soon discovers that the town is full of people who are actually members of a clandestine organization who dress up like monsters from The Lord of the Rings (hell bent on bringing so called order to their town by inflicting chaos and seemingly accidental murders). This leads to many gags, quotable lines and a sort of extended hilarious cameo by former James Bond player Timothy Dalton. I don't wish to give away any of the smart punch lines or the last 40 minutes of the movie (Which is an absolute blast by the way from start to finish). To top it all off, the movie is fast paced, frenetic and hip, full of high speed chases, gun battles and explosions galore, not to mention a bit of gratuitous gore here or there (believe it). Despite all this, the movie is more than a kind of showcase for comedy or technique, everything fits together perfectly not just at the whim of farce, it works for the story and characters; and far more importantly, the near perfect screenplay. I cannot recommend Hot Fuzz enough, it’s simply the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time, and if that isn't considered worthy of being funny, I don't know what is. One thing is for sure, I'd prefer movies like this to the constant comedy dribble Hollywood manages to put out it seems like every other week. Simon Pegg puts all of those movies to utter shame... I'd forgive Will Ferrel for his great turn in dramas like Stranger than Fiction thoughRead full review
