If you picked up Tristram Shandy - a Cock and Bull Story for a chance to see Gillian Anderson, you may be disappointed. She is in there, but not in any major way. And, if you were hoping to watch the movie instead of reading Cliff's Notes, before writing an English Lit paper, well, Good Luck. Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy was written in NINE VOLUMES beginning in 1759, so you may wonder why it was never made into a film before now. The answer is that it is notorious for its lack of structure- and what we must call "un-filmability". That is, the most famous thing about Tristram Shandy is that it would be impossible to turn it into a movie. So Michael Winterbottom gives up on that and, instead gives us a movie ABOUT making a movie of Tristram Shandy. And a very confusing and funny movie it is, provided you pay attention, and provided you weren't in it for the sex or the Big Stars. Which is not to say this is some perky little G rated costume drama. It abounds with naughty references to sex and repeatedly makes you wonder exactly where Tristram's uncle Toby was shot (I won't tell, either. Just wait until he shows you.) It is one of those films that makes smart people feel smarter and leaves the less brainy feeling, well, a little less brainy. In this day of the obligatory "behind the scenes" feature, director Winterbottom skips that step and makes the whole movie a "making the movie" feature. If you are a little confused, you are almost ready. Go get your Cliffs notes and your popcorn. You are in for a wild ride.Read full review
These English guys, speaking in several dialects with bad acoustics and / or recording, spend more time chatting about their yellow teeth and receding hairlines than TRYING TO FILM "TRISTRAM SHANDY". The good summary comments are for the parts where they actually filmed the novel. A miserable failure. Someone else try it , Please.
