The kinds of topics that are addressed in this book are happening in a highly animated way among photography educators. The idea of visual literacy--photographers needing both technical and conceptual skills, being informed about their subject matter through interdisciplinary research, and using all of the tools available to make work--that is a distinctive driving concern for all of us engaged in this education.--Dennie Eagleson Associate Professor of Photography, Antioch College, "How do we provide an effective framework for photographers to investigate without getting lost or distracted by photographic 'politics'? This book gets you thinking about 'why to' rather that 'how to'. It includes practical information and delves into the thinking process that underlies the making of all good photographs. This account provides a timeless structure and not only accommodates but also embraces the fact that cameras, software and darkrooms are constantly changing. It provides a wealth of information and guidance to help all photographers improve skills, and ways of seeing, and more. Angela Faris Belt is fine art photographer and educator for more than 18 years. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally."-- WetPaint.com "The kinds of topics that are addressed in this book are happening in a highly animated way among photography educators. Not only does this book explore the dichotomy between fine art and commercial photography, but it also deftly integrates technique and vision, thus enabling photographers to take their work to the next level. More importantly, it promotes the notion that anyone can give substance to their ideas through the language of photography." -- San Francisco Book Review.com "The majority [of books like this] tend to be slightly biased towards newcomers to photography but Angela Faris Belt's book is a little different in that it negates many of the 'basics' and instead focuses on the information required to produce 'sophisticated images'. Belt assumes a certain level of assured prior knowledge on the part of her readers. Some of the content is rather technical, such as close analysis of exposure and histograms. However, much of the book is given over to a range of artist portfolios that effectively demonstrate the real-world application of many of the ideas discussed. There's a lot of text and relatively few images, so it's probably not for the faint-hearted in terms of bedtime reading. The images in the Artist Portfolio pages are fairly stylised and often series- or project-based rather than standalone 'hero' shots. More advanced photographers looking for fresh ideas and out-of-the-ordinary approaches will find the book inspirational and reinvigorating, challenging them to explore concepts such as mutiple exposures, plastic cameras, and artistic ways to capture movement with confidence." -- Digital Photographer, page 110, "How do we provide an effective framework for photographers to investigate without getting lost or distracted by photographic 'politics'?
