This has to be the best CD I have purchased in a while. I saw her on Letterman and Paul Shaffer said it was the best new artist he had seen in 25 years and he was right! I can't express how awesome she is. Upbeat jazz, insightful songs & groovin' music all around - WoW!! Not only is Esperanza super-talented she is beautiful as well. She is an old soul revamping Jazz for a younger generation. If you don't like this Cd then you got to get your ears checked - this cd is great!!!
Bass player, composer, and vocalist Esperanza Spalding is the most exciting new jazz artist to emerge since Nora Jones and Diana Krall. Her bass playing is extraordinary, and her vocals range from rich chocolate-like comfort to pure feline edge. Some of the playing harkens back to the "late-night NPR" jazz of my youth, and other numbers are simply samba, but something is different here, new and innovative. Perhaps the great engineering and the professional playing helps, but if you like jazz that can be played for company or zoning out on a long drive, yet intellectually satisfying, this performer is going to please you. I can't wait for her next CD!
Recently read a brief blurb about Ms Esperanza indicating a new voice and sound of contemporary jazz. I'm a fan of the late 50's through 70's jazz, and haven't followed it much since then. Well, it sounded like a recording too good to be true, a fresh sound, amplified bass, and small group ensemble. I'd been listening to the Mingus Big Band album, Gunslinging Birds, and thought, hmmmm, a small version perhaps of that wild and woozy sound. And, so, it was, is, a fine blend of upbeat, Latin, and harmonic chords in vocals with bass, horn, drums and keyboard/piano. What finally made me buy it was, oddly, a signed liner note card. Now I'm way to old to be interested in young, beautiful women like Esperanza, but not to old to look. I've even asked my local director of our cultural center to see if he could book her into town, with her own group or perhaps a classical quartet we all love. Buy it, folks!Read full review
Beautiful music! Like soft jazz fusion, but really good modern jazz. Fantastic compositions, fantastic arrangements, and what PIPES! Pleasant, melodic music with a beautiful girl...uh, voice. In one of the songs, MELA, I can taste overtones of Lalo Schifrin. Very nice. Another, I ADORE YOU, I played over and over. I can't wait to get her other album and for her to make more! Great music!!
I am really thrilled about this CD and excited by Esperanza's talent for expressing her personality in such a bold soulful sensual and versatile manner. All very well stated with top notch musicianship and production with respect to the finest classical jazz traditions; improvisation, composition, passion/emotion. Esperansa's music is a welcomed contemporary international sound indeed, in a musical landscape filled with watered down commercialized toxic waste that music industry executives too often try to sell as art. An equally fine listening experience on an el cheapo box as it is on a audiophile quality system. Thank you Esperanza for thinking so much of us to grace us with such a gift-can't wait to see you perform live.
