The 3DO while a failed platform was released at a wonderful and exciting time for the Gaming community. It attempted a set top box idea to allow all manner of multimedia, Music, Photo’s, games and films to be used on it.. much like the 360 and PS3 which have now only recently achieved.. well over 10years later!! It was one of the first machines to offer CD as the storage media, thus opening the doorway to a world of new features such as CD Audio, Video playback and the mass storage used for larger games. GEX is one of the machines Grad A titles without doubt, it offers large varied levels, humorous speech and beautifully pre-Rendered character animations as well as excellent CD Soundtrack. Basically you control a Gecko named GEX, you must collect items throughout the level to complete the various sub stages which then eventually leads onto a boss. It the classic tried and tested platform formula that’s still used in many new games today. One of the most noticeable features is how Gex can scale walls and ceilings. as he is a Lizard! This adds a new dimension to the game style.. I think after this the only game to use this style was Spiderman on the Megadrive and MegaCD. As well as this GEX uses his tongue and Tail to attack enemies and collect the many coins and bonus items. If you’re a mature gamer and remember when this game was released way back in 1994 then perhaps like me it will remind you of the feeling when these great new games started to come out and move away from cartridge based systems.. the wow factor of all the new features!.. the nostalgia is great! If you want a good clean holsum platformer for your 3DO then this game ticks all the right box's, it’s refreshing to play and has in my book stood the test of time. Gex is a platform game that was first released in 1994 (not 1996 Ebay) for Panasonic 3DO then ported to other consoles like Playstation and Saturn. Gex was initially going to be the 3DO mascot before it was ported to other consoles. You play as a talking Gecko voiced by Dana Gould which can be really annoying the longer you play, since the same lines are often repeated. Although not nearly as terrible as the dialog from Awesome Possum, but the same idea. Gex has some unique abilities like climbing walls, tongue fire/ice spit, tail attacks. The 3DO version has a save feature which resembles the map from Super Mario World on SNES. This feature is quite welcome since the game becomes very tedious in one sitting. As far as replay value this game doesn't offer any once completed like other platform games. I still have to recommend Gex to platform fans since the genre on the console is limited to poor games like Casper, Johnny Bazookatone and Soccer Kid.Read full review
I love this game, more specifically i love this port of this game on this system. The 3DO has a very bad reputation, but for those willing to get past it, this system paired with this game equals awesome, it is a great platformer with some really amazing graphics for its time and of course a great control scheme with the all important fun factor. If you have a 3DO and do not have this, i highly recommend it, if you are looking for a gem this is your game. 5 stars, 2 thumbs up, 4 out of 4, i want to have gex's babies
Fun game. One of the few games on the system that I find enjoyable. It has some fun humor
