Working for the Quakes and aspiring to one day be a GM of a Major League club is what prompted me to give this game a shot. Let me start off by saying that by no means is this game perfect, but it is a really fun game. I can def. see where this game gets bad reviews, but as far as running the organization goes, its just flat out entertaining. You start off by selecting the team you wish to control throughout your career. You begin during the 2008 off-season and must negotiate with players who are eligble for free agency, arbitration, etc. It is very important to stay within your budget, especially when dealing with 6 clubs (your MLB, AAA, AA, A+, A, SS teams). You must keep track of your 40 man roster, protect top players who are eligible for the Rule 5 draft, offer arbitration, give player signing bonuses, and even offer players incentive bonuses for performing well. All the rules regarding personnel moves are present: super 2's, rule 5, type A/B free agents, and much more. People rate this game low becauase of the simulation stats. Too many players hit .400 during the season, the Reds won 22 games (not a typo), and a few other bugs. However, if you can somehow get past this, it is def. a worthwhile game and would recommend it to anyone who is on the fence of purchasing this game. There is nothing more rewarding than selecting a bottom dweller team like the Nationals and stockpiling their minor league organization with quality prospects in order to set the foundation for them to compete in the future. After having 4 straight 100+ loss seasons, I was able to finally hit .500 in year 5 after trading high salaried guys for prospects, importing japanese stars, and having successful amateur drafts all while operating with a strict budget. This game gets an 8/10.Read full review
For any baseball fan this is the perfect buy. It gives you the opertunity to be the GM of any team in the major leagues. You tak control of all six teams in the organization (MLB, AAA, AA, A+, A and SS) something that no other game has ever done befor. It takes you much further into the job of a GM than MLB 09 The Show's Franchise modes. It also has both drafts the first year player draft and the Rule 5 draft. You also can bid on Japanesse free agents to find the next Ichiro. Something that no other game has ever done. It is simple enough for young children to play and entertainning enough to keep aduldts happy too.
I'm just not impressed with this game. The bright side thus far is that I've been able to learn a lot more about baseball with the Rule 5 draft and things like that which usually are considered very minimally. But the negatives outweigh that. Once a pitcher is committed to a strategy, you're stuck. If you've chosen to pitch to a player, you can't go to a pick off move, a pitch out, or anything of the sort. It's incredibly slow and boring to watch the simulating games. The menus are PAINFULLY confusing. You get in-game messages about upcoming events, but you're not linked to the screens to handle the events; you're forced to explore to find it all in the labyrinth of menu confusion. There are lots of issues I have with this game, and honestly, I'm probably not playing it again. It's a rent game, not a purchase game. Save yourself the expense of ownership and hit up your local rental joint if you're really curious.Read full review
This has to be the best manager game in front of NFL Head Coach. It has great details on how to manage your team by bidding and trading for prospects to help your team win the World Series. It doesn't have great in-game graphics so I play those on MLB The Show. The great part of the game is the ability to bring up players from the lower classes in the Minors from A to the Majors. Overall, its a great game to control your team to the World Series and have a productive 30 years of managing. Grade: B
Highly suggest buying this for your kids if you into a fun action packed game for your kids. Adults can even enjoy this game. Hours and hours of fun for the whole family. Keeps the kids busy for hours on end when you go on vacation. This game made it so that I didn't even know my kids were in the back seat on a 19 hour drive on vacation.
