Rhythm Thief & The Emperor's Treasure is very nice to say the least. My first impression of the game is that it was just like a Professor Layton game, except for the fact that you play rhythm games instead of doing puzzles. Like with the Professor Layton games, the storyline isn't the most epic one you'll ever see, but it's still a nice story line considering that rhythm games were the primary focus. In other words, it's good enough and can be enjoyed by anyone at any age. The game takes place in the city of Paris, France. The controls are clear and easy to follow. All you have to do is follow the instructions for each game and keep up with the rhythm, which can be tricky depending on the difficulty of each task. Speaking of which, what I find very interesting about this game is that the difficulty for each game doesn't just increase as the game goes on. Instead, the difficulty levels are mixed up. So if you don't pay attention to the star ratings, you won't know exactly how hard it should be. The animation also has a Layton feel to it, but with it's own special twist. The colors in the animation are vibrant and the specific details applied to the city are excellent. Some minor cons that people may not like are the fact that you can't pick difficulty levels, but all you have to do is finish a game to move on. You don't need to do extremely well, just do enough to complete the rhythm game. Just like similar games, the story isn't as long as some would prefer. Once again though, the rhythm games are the primary focus, not the story. Another minor con is that some games require that the 3D effect is turned off, but trust me when I say that there is a very good reason for that. I won't mention specific details, but in some games, you have to tilt your 3DS from side to side. This is bad for your eyes, so the 3D effect will be turned off automatically for you. I enjoyed playing this title and I think that anyone with a Nintendo 3DS should give this game a try.Read full review
Rhythm Thief is a great rhythm game and a ton of fun. It is definitely comparable to the Professor Layton series, only instead of puzzles you complete rhythm challenges. You progress through the game's story by completing many different rhythm games that involve sliding the stylus, pressing a combination of buttons, and tilting the 3DS in certain directions; all in sync with the beat of the songs. There are also animated cutscenes--very similar to those of the Professor Layton games--as well as minigames that can unlock bonus content (like Layton as well). It's a great game, but kind of on the short side (I've gotten approx. 14 hours out of it and I've nearly unlocked everything.) Still, I would definitely recommend it.
My 12 year old says, "even though the character designs are a bit wonky, along with iffy voice acting, rhythm thief is actually a really good game overall. the story is very interesting and deep, and the minigames arent so easy its dreadful. its a shame that its very underrated; id like to see a sequel someday."

Not many people know of this game and was overlooked when it released, hence the hidden gem moniker. Pretty fun game and pretty rare to find these days.
