Romancing Saga 3 is a very intriguing game developed for Squaresoft. You can choose from 8 characters, each with there own inherent ability. And so you being your adventure. This is game very non-linear and after each characters introductory story, you are given free roam of the world and you must use your own judgment on what to accomplish next. This world is very diverse, containing an arctic area, a large resort-like beach area with many treasure coves, a jungle area, an underground crystal cavern and a desert that separates the West from the East, where an entirely different culture exists, just to name a few. This game is unlike it's other Square brothers, in that you do not level up by experience, rather each character randomly levels up in a certain stat area. Also, special attacks called Waza(s) are learned by using regular attacks in battle. Another battle feature is addition are battle formation that can raises characters stats and give them an advantage. The music is excellent; adrenaline pumping for boss fights, adventure inspiring when in caves and relaxing in the towns. Another cool feature is the Merchant mini game, in where you can use tactics and capital to win different business and trades, eventually becoming a monopoly! This is a very fun mini-game that can take up a lot of time and it very rewarding in terms of money. The graphics are excellent for the time but the out-of-battle enemy sprites are a bit redundant, but the ones in battle are excellent. Overall, this is one of the best SFC RPGs, if not one of the best games of the 90s. There is tons of replay, since you can choose from different characters and job combinations. You may learn spells or wazas that you did not in another play through. There are many way to do each quest and many other characters (besides the initial 8) who can help you along the way. But because of the non-linear fashion of this game, it will not appeal for those with a taste for the mediocre, go to dungeon A kill boss A, go to dungeon B kill boss B Ad infinitum, type of game. This is a thinking person's game and the experience will truly be a rewarding one.Read full review
