Product Information
For fans of the multiplayer arcade classic, Midway throws down the Gauntlet once again, with this 3D hack-and-slash RPG that supports as many as four in its cooperative play modes and offers a number of online features as well. Although it takes place in a fictional, fantasy realm, the adventuresome tale of Seven Sorrows incorporates the events of earlier Gauntlet games, and is grounded in legend and subconscious symbolism. In old times, as the story goes, there were four immortal heroes who sought to destroy a cruel, insane king. They failed, and three were sentenced to death by crucifixion. Yet they -- or at least, their spirits -- next find themselves transported to the realm of the cruel king's own insanity. Here, they learn that the king is afflicted by the great emotional pain of seven deadly acts of cruelty, including the murder of his lover. The heroes now must adventure through the madman's psyche, to undo these seven sins, before his insanity unleashes chaos and destruction across the entire kingdom.
I was so excited that Midway was releasing Gauntlet Seven Sorrows. I had played Gauntlet Dark Legacy. I know the graphics were a little outdated, but I really liked the game. So, when I heard they were making another updated Gauntlet, I was thrilled. Once I got the game in, I was quickly given a reality check. It just wasn't as good. The graphics were much better. But the storyline and the basic attack line of the characters was just frustrating. I finished the game with light gameplay in 3 nights. Hard gameplay would have been easily less than 1 day. The views in several fight areas were completely blocked. Save points and power up areas were too far apart. It wasn't a bad game..it just wasn't that great. I would recommend this if you have already gone through your other games and just want something to play. RPG wise this doesn't allow for rapid character development. If you use auto save and exit the game, you lose all of your bought skills. You have to rebuy after the next save point. Trust me on this it will get you killed a few times! The graphics are worth playing the game alone though. But with xbox 360 the next gen are still going to blow anything regular xbox out of the water.Read full review
I purchased this game fully aware that many people gave it a bad review. I walked into the game not expecting much, but was actually surprised. I don't believe that people give this game the justice it deserves, to a certain extent. I know there are issues with the game length being extremely short. That is definitely a downfall for the game. However, I believe this game should get more credit because of its amount of abilities. Each character gets a lot of cool looking moves to use and it makes the gameplay more exciting than just "hack 'n' slash". I have enjoyed the game so far and look forward to playing it more. Give it a chance and if you can get this game at a low price - try it out!
I enjoy hack/slash type games. This game is straight hack/slash action but sacrifices length and customizing of characters for excellent graphics. If you've played through most hack/slash games like Baldur's gate, the original Gauntlet, etc., than I recommend you give this one a quick try. Be prepared to be a little disappointed though in how fast the game is over and how little the backstory is for all the characters.
If you loved Gauntlet Dark Legacy this will disappoint
I was very disappointed in this game. This new version of Gauntlet has a good story line at the start but lacked the mental challenges and seems to be only about fighting. As you progress through the games the story does not seem to evolve any. I absolutely loved Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. You had to collect items like crystals, keys and food, as well as find hidden stones to advance to new worlds. This provided a mental challenge as well as the thrill of fighting evil. And as you progressed the story was expanded. To me Seven Sorrows is simply a fighting game and it lacks the details, which made Gauntlet: Dark Legacy such a fun game. And it also lacks the detailed graphic and vivid color of Dark Legacy.
This could have been a great 4 player co-op game, but it is too short. I finished this game with my friends in less than 7 hours of playing time. It says that it has online play, but the times we tried there was no one online to play with.
The original Gauntlet for the Gamecube is a much better game and takes a lot longer to complete.
