Mindjack is a third-person shooter in which enemies don't so much as flinch after being shot a half-dozen times, and your friendly A.I. companions frequently forget to take cover. Its palette is, for the most part, extremely dull; everything has a bit of a blue-gray tinge that evokes a drab, overcast day. And the characters move and fire with an off-putting herky-jerky motion. Mostly though, it's a highly cynical attempt to cash in on the lucrative shooter genre. The game's main gimmick borrows heavily from Ghost in Shell, which makes sense in light of its Japanese origins. Masmune Shirow's classic story introduced the notion of a human brain that can be hacked, bringing with it all sorts of terrifying implications. In Mindjack, mind's are hacked by what look like free-floating spirits, which can jump into a civilian's mind at will and turn them into a gun-toting maniac. In practical terms, the civilians are there to provide a few additional power-ups while you take a guard by surprise with a hail of gunfire. Otherwise, they mostly cower in the corner while the hero and his female companion -- both such complete action movie archetypes that I can't remember their names -- go about their business. In the hands of a capable developer, Mindjack could've take the notion of hacking a human being in new and terrifying directions by demonstrating what it's like to lose control. Instead, you're given an action-adventure in which the main characters utter lines like "You're just full of surprises!" without a hint of irony. REVIEW 0diggsdigg0Mindjack Review ( PS3 , XBOX 360 ) A lazy, corporate-mandated third-person shooter...with a twist! By Kat Bailey Posted: 01/28/2011 ...continued, (page 2 of 2) In the hands of a capable developer, Mindjack could've take the notion of hacking a human being in new and terrifying directions by demonstrating what it's like to lose control. Instead, you're given an action-adventure in which the main characters utter lines like "You're just full of surprises!" without a hint of irony. As a respite from the game's relentless mediocrity, it's possible to allow other players to jump into your campaign, and given the chance, they certainly will. While they can come to your aid, most of the time they'll probably take the role of the bad guy for an impromptu deathmatch. The pitched gun battles that result are fun for a while, but they also bring your progress to a grinding halt. As a result, you'll probably end up limiting access to your game unless you get bored and want a change of pace -- something that happens pretty often in Mindjack. There are a few other twists on the typical shooter as well, like the ability to hack foes and turn them into convenient, bullet-sponging zombies. But these touches feel a lot less impressive when you turn a corner and find five enemies literally tangled together in their spawn spot. Mindjack's execution is just ludicrously poor at times.Read full review

I love this game. I love being able to control my enemies and make them part of my team, and to enter the game of another person and play as his enemy. This is the first time I see a game like this and I really recommend it.
