The basketball is much improved over last year in this series, and somehow has more of a fun quality to it than the NBA Live titles available to the PSP. Maybe I enjoy blocking shots more than I should? I haven't found anyone waiting to play online so far, but I'll keep trying. What really makes this game are the mini-games. The normal 3-point, skills challenge, own the court, etc. are all still here. I haven't even tried Horse or Dodgeball yet, though, because of the new mini-games. Hot Shot, Big Shooter (Skee-Ball), and Pinball are all quick fun. The standout, however, is Conquest Mode. Risk, but with hoops. Attack and win and you take the players you beat and control their city. Lose and you lose a player. Lose when attacked by another team, and of course you lose the whole city and the players you were defending with. Control an area of the map and you get an NBA Legend to add to your growing horde of players. Lots of fun and with some strategy too: you can't put all your best players on one city, or you'll lose one of your other cities in battle when attacked; Some cities are easier to hide bad players, since they can only be attacked from certain other cities, but a place like Detroit can be hit from 6 or 7 directions...ouch, you can't defend that with weak guys. I admit, shot blocking is a bit too easy. Plus, there is a little bit of a tendency for your guy to pick up his dribble (although it's nothing at all like the huge problem NBA 06 had with this.) Those two things keep this from a 5 out of 5 for me, but I'm definitely having a lot of fun with it.Read full review
This game has a good amount packed into it. Not just basketball games either. The throw in some nice carnival minigames as well as the all star weekend games. The dunk contest is alright, but the 3 point contest and other skills contest make up for it. Conquest mode on this game is also fun. Choose your team and try and take over the NBA for real. everytime you beat a team they take on your jerseys and there players belong to you. Unlocking legends everytime you take over a division. Fending off opponents that challenge you lets you take one of there players. If they win they take your team. So go right back at them with a stronger team. I think conquest mode is probably the best mode to play besides a season. Season mode if you have played any other sports game is about the same, no need for me to describe it. But the extras in this game make it a game that is hard to put down. The only thing I'm missing is the lack of instant replay.Read full review
My score does not reflect anything about the fun that is had playing this game. I have lot's of fun while playing, but the gameplay has a lot of kinks that need worked out. Blocking is all too easy (but loads of fun) the AI is absolutely ridiculous. No one on your team moves on offense, instead they just stand in the pre determined spot waiting for a pass, 90% of the time while being guarded by and opposing player. The shooting takes a while to get the hang of but when mastered is quite fun. The mini-games is where the hours of fun comes in. Dodgeball is great, the 3-point contest is a blast and horse is just as fun as it is in real life. The Dunk contest is very very tricky but fun nonetheless. Graphics are as would be expected from the psp, ranging from "Wow i can't belive this is the psp" to "what is that guys arm doing through his chest". All in all though it is a great game that is drowned by it's overpowering flaws!Read full review
The actual in-game play is erratic, but the Conquest mode is brillant (heard of the boardgame called RISK???). The Carnival and minigame modes are fun too and are perfect for what the PSP should be, an on-the-go, portable system. Throw in season and online play and this game is fairly robust. I literally could not stop playing the conquest mode and have logged about 25 hours so far in that alone!!! Rent or buy, I think you'll find something to like in this game.
This game is great. I still think that the 2K series are better but for the PSP this game is far better than the game NBA. For the price I got it for, it was a great deal and some of the downsides are limited controlling over game rules/violations/setup..etc. The controls are fairly easy to.
