Back when MTV was worth watching and actually contributed to society instead of destroying it, they had a little irreverent game show called Remote Control. From what I am lead to believe by Wikipedia and my own fuzzy memories, Remote Control was the first non-music programming on MTV. While it was one of my all time favorite game shows, it unfortunately paved the way for unholy shows like the Real World and Jersey Shore, but I digress. Besides isn’t this supposed to be a review of the video game and not MTV? Anyways, Remote Control did have a few video game versions for the NES and the C64. There could be others, but I am too lazy to check. Those two were the ones I played and since this review is for the NES version, I shall concentrate on it. Remote Control is a pretty bare bones experience. It composes of a few screens and a few tunes, but it is based off a game show and not the eternal struggle for space independence on the planet Zorgon. I found the graphics worked well to the spirit of the show. The host cracks me up, but I am not entirely sure why. Even though the music is limited it also conveys the spirit of the show. I would say overall it would be on par with the Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy NES games. The game play is limited though. You select a channel that has some kind of theme and then answer a question based on that theme, like The Bat Channel or Dead or Canadian. The questions are multiple choice and only three choices are given. This presents the problem of challenge. Even if you don’t know the answer, you have a pretty good chance of guessing it. Also, the other contestants are dinks and won’t provide much of a challenge. After a couple of play throughs, you will pretty much know all the answers. As a game, Remote Control isn’t much. It’s based off a game show and provides little challenge and lack of replay value. As a nostalgia piece, Remote Control’s stock increases. I miss the era of Remote Control and all that is left of its legacy is a few YouTube videos and a few game adaptations. I love the NES Remote Control, but that is because I am a nostalgia freak and fan of the show. Anyone else who couldn’t give two craps about either should stay far away from this game and go back to watching Jersey Shore.Read full review
