This is a good game overall. It did not get as much praise because of the differences between the Dreamcast version of Virtual-On: Oratario Tangram. However, to explain why the PS2 version is so different, we have to look at the game in which the PS2 version is based on, Virtual On Force. V04 as it is normally referred to had a 4 player mode, where you would fight in a stage, and go at it. This is why the PS2 version plays similar to this. Also, they threw in a story to fill up space on the disc. Story mode is where you will unlock more Virturoids too. I find the game to be very challenging. To unlock all the Virturoids takes practice, and lot's of headache. The challenge mode is where you get a good taste of VO4 as far as 2 on 2 gameplay. The only gripe is the second partner is AI controlled, but it's still fun to play if you miss VOOT. This game was released in Japan first, with a few extra's such as collecting data disc, and having the database collection. Also the Japanese version had balanced AI while the US version resorts to cheese. The audio also suffers with a simplistic translation of the Japanese version. Many of the US voice overs sound incomplete and very uninspired. The graphics are a lot better actually than Oratario Tangram because you can use the PS2's component cables, or if you have a PS3, it will upscale to 720p full screen with smoothing detail. I still have love for this game despite it's quirks. My only gripe is more of the Virtual On Force game engine should have been left in or at least thrown in as a bonus. There are not a whole lot of copies of this game floating around. while it's not as good as VOOT, it has elements of a sequel Virtual-On Force, which has yet to be released to any console.Read full review
If you rated this game on a scale of ten; any points it was given would have to be strictly for nostalgia. Anyone who remembers the Virtual On games that made such a big hit in the arcade and on the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast remember a very fluid game with a great meshing of mech combat and 3d fighter stylings. The games may not have had a followable plot line, mainly because there wasn't really one there to begin with. However, that didn't matter because the mechanics were solid and the control schemes were great. Then came Sony, apparently either Sega went retarded or a Sony exec was over the project because it does nothing other than trash the legacy of the previous installments. Basically, you take the game, which to me looks worse on the ps2 than on the dreamcast and you add an incoherent plotline with some standard horrible voice acting, ala SEGA, and finally create an almost incoherent control scheme. Then call it Virtual On "Marz". Don't get me wrong its not the worst game you will ever play but don't expect to get so enthralled you have to beat it with every character or have you buddies over for an all night Virtual On Festival, that is unless the best thing you and your buddies have to do otherwise is poke each other in the eye with forks.Read full review
if you enjoyed the original on the saturn, stay away from this game. i wish i had stayed away... i enjoyed the saturn version and thought "hey, the game should be better on a superior machine.." but in reality, the version is clumsy and all of the things that made the orignal one awesome never made it through to this version. if you buy on graphics alone, then the game is good. but control, music and overall gameplay is sub-par.
In all honesty i love the game, but thats only because im a fan of virtual on. if anyone else who isnt a fan plays it. theyll hate the loading time(i did), the dialogue(i did), and the slowed fights(i kinda did). if your a fan of this series then buy the one for dreamcast. genuine genius. its simply better than the one for ps2. also the one in both arcades are better, virtual on cybertroopers and virtual on force(only jap release.) but if your a fan. buy it.
I was so happy to find this online for such a sweet deal. I had always played this in the arcades where it's as close as a replica to being in a cockpit can get. Now I can enjoy it at home. The game story line is alright but the main attraction is the game play. You start off with a few robots and gain more as you play the story line and clear challenges. The controllers are difficult to learn at first but with practice you get the hang of it. After that you try out each robot and see which one best fits your play styles. def. worth a try
