I wish it had the operating instructions. There are some things I cannot figure out.

This camera is the 3rd Canon pocket camera I've used...previous ones were the Canon PowerShot 530 & PowerShot 540... THE GOOD: better resolution, and the Macro mode works well. It can take a larger capacity SD card. It can also shoot in hi resolution widescreen mode (great, in case I want to incorporate a photo into a video project). Itused 2 standard AA batteries, and it does retain the optical viewfinder, and the camera is also smaller than earlier versions of the PowerShot line... THE BAD: a LOT of Parallax Error when using the optical viewfinder, quite pronounced...if you CENTER a subject in the viewfinder, it will end up at the lower part of the photo. This is where looking at the LCD screen (if the sunlight is not hitting it) might be the bast way to compose a shot. I bought THIS model specifically because it did have the optical viewfinder. The Parallax Error is minimal in the older PS 530 & PS 540 camera's. Also, when looking through the optical viewfinder, the lower left portion is blocked by the lens...yup, the barrel of the lens is visible in the viewfinder !!! I have a lot of respect for the Canon products I'm fond of, but this is a major blunder on Canon's engineering dept. Finally, the steps you must to to, to set up for a Macro shot, (or other specialty shot) is cumbersome... Sorry Canon, If I buy another USED Canon pocket camera, it will be an older model...Read full review

love that fact that it takes AA batteries The Canon A1200 has the features which we value most and as such, is our favorite digital camera. In particular, * It can take wide angle photos - the equivalent of 28mm on the older film SLR's * It uses 2 AA batteries which is great - especially when traveling overseas. In the past, we encountered too many occasions when a battery became exhausted in the middle of the day or could not be recharged at night. This was especially true when traveling overseas. So now we only consider cameras which use AA batteries because they can be purchased almost anywhere. * It takes HD video. * Its size is compact and can easily fit in a pocket or purse. Years ago, I enjoyed taking photos with SLR's and wore out 3 of them (the film versions). However, I missed many shots on vacation because I did not want to carry an SLR everywhere I went. The compact size of the A1200 allows us to carry it everywhere with ease. And it takes high quality photos. * This camera does not offer as many options as some others. However, it gives you the options people use most of the time. I do not miss the other ones.Read full review
this particular model canon is user friendly it is equipped with eyeview finder,so you can take pictures without the screen which saves your battery life, great value for my money great as a pocket camera so I bought two. One for myself and my dad. It's finger friendly and easy to use My dad is 85 so it is perfect for him and it only takes 2 batteries don't have to worry about recharging just pop in 2 new batteries. Its very reliable and has good picture quality
Takes decent, though not spectacular (for an enthusiast) pics: sharp (a bit too much), a tad contrasty, good colors of consumer-like appeal. It's light and small for my medium-sized hands, plasticky squeaking, and still reasonably built. Let's say it clearly: For $120-150 you won't find any better camera taking 1K pics on 2 AAs, w/ OVF, 720p video and decent 30-120mm zoom. I had to buy it for its optical viewfinder, which may be small and dim, but amongst the last of a dying breed: Real cameras for 3-point supported shooting (2 hands + forehead), decoupled from pulse and other bodily vibrations. I wish it had only 5-6 Mp, vs. its 12.x Mp on a typical 1/2.3" sensor, but down there it's a Mpix race ;-) Also I have an older A620 (my reference in the mid-class P&S) and an APS-C CSC from Samsung. Both are better, but they'd better be at 4x the price... yet the CSC has no OVF.Read full review
