I have never been a fan of historical fiction so I was not excited when my book club chose this book. It is now one of my favorite books of all time. The story is very well written. My only regret? That I bought a paperback and don't have a hardback for posterity!

The Indigo Girl will transport you to early America. Good and bad. There is some violence, slavery, which was sadly part of our history. She was a bright spot. Had no idea the history or importance of Indigo before reading this.

Enjoyed this fictionalized story based on historical person. My daughter and I enjoyed a trip to Charleston historic sites and heard about this person. I was impressed with the story the author was able to bring to life. We do not stop to think of people in relation to the time they lived in and the place they lived in until brought to appreciate those facts with a story such as this. I think I might have emphasized even more the very real perils of alligators and snakes in this environment.

I thought it had a slow start, and felt a little far fetched in the basic premise of a 16 year old running an estate farm. It is moving along nicely and I’m enjoying it. Do I love it….. Not yet

Well written and sourced historical fiction. Fascinating story of the time period and southern lifestyle and role of women and workings of a plantation life and challenges.
