The Color of Magic is the first of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books and gives the reader a whirlwind tour of the Discworld through the eyes of the Disc's first tourist. This is the first of two books of the adventures of our tourist and his impromptu tour guide, a wizardy type of guy, and completes the book The Light Fantastic. The Color of Magic is a wonderful read full of fantasy places and peoples and a constant edge of sarcastic humor. All of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books are worthy of a place on any bookshelf, he was one of the best at satirical humor and fantasy fun, but to really understand the Disc The Color of Magic, along with it's sister book The Light Fantastic, truly sets the scene for all the others Discworld books which are many and various in content being mostly stand alone stories. I highly recommend The Color of Magic, along with The Light Fantastic, as one of the must reads of our time for any lover of fantasy and/or satire. I am a fairly new Pratchett fan but having read The Color of Magic I will be a faithful one.Read full review

If you're here, it's likely because friends have been nagging you to pick up a book by Terry Pratchett. Well, your friends have great taste in literature, because this book is one of the most entertaining pieces of fiction you will ever find. High drama, low humor, and mediocre wizards are what you'll find inside the pages of "Color of Magic," the first Discworld novel, and the first in the Wizard Storyline (see my guide to Terry Pratchett's Discworld for more details about the various storylines). Meet Rincewind, a nearly loveable scoundrel of a failed wizard who only knows one spell. Mainly because that one spell is one of the eight great spells, and it has managed to scare off all the other spells Rincewind once knew. He is our story's unwitting, unwilling, and generally unfalteringly cowardly antihero. Two Flowers is the embodiment of all tourists everywhere, and a firm believer in everything always working out (much to the chagrin of our pessimistic protagonist). Two Flowers and his magic luggage that follows him everywhere have set out to see the world, and it is Rincewind's duty to protect them from bandits, thieves, and poor exchange rates. Their adventures together take them to the very edge of the disc, and beyond, testing the very depths of the human spirit, as well as Rincewind's ability to flee from every dangerous situation. The beauty of this book is in its balance. Although it is constantly wacky, there is always some tension in the foreground to justify the ridiculous actions of the characters. The pace is quick, and the action plentiful. Truly, this book is one of the great masterpieces of the fantasy genre. If you've already read Tolkien and Lieber, then it's time you gave Pratchett his day in court.Read full review
Terry Pratchett had a way with words and images that makes you feel like you are actually in the story. Highly recommend and and all of his books as an excellent read.

The book is lovely, it's exactly what I paid for, but it's in slightly rougher shape than I'd have liked.

This was an interesting, really WEIRD book! It is a must read for anyone who happened to enjoy "Hitchhikers' Guide to the Universe." I bought this book because I had heard a lot about the Discworld series and wanted to at least get an idea of what it was before Pratchett's DVD comes out. There are times when the book can get a bit confusing because it's sooo "out there" but all in all it's a really fun journey!
