This book is the manual for youth in the Boy Scouting program (ages 10 1/2 to 18). The various editions of the Boy Scout Handbook are the most collected manuals in all of the Scouting library. The book is divided up into sections with color-coded chapters. The book is used as a guide to progress boys through the Scouting ranks from Tenderfoot to Eagle Scout. There are also introductions to topics such as the outdoors, first aid, citizenship, fitness, & Scouting. The book with its colorful, modern-style layout has color photographs, black & white illustrations, & checklists. The book has curved corners, to withstand some wear. An index & table of contents make it easy to refer to specific items. The book has been well though out. The book also has an attached pamphlet in the front, "How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide" (1998 printing, BSA #46-015). In several ways, it could be considered the best Boy Scout handbook BSA has produced, but some would consider otherwise. Many of the topics have been shrunk down compared to earlier editions. This was done to reduce the size of the book, to modernize the layout, & to add more specific photographs & illustrations. Particularly, much of the outdoor information of previous editions was moved to a revised & strengthened Fieldbook, that came out a few years after this version of the handbook. The 1998 version is the 11th edition (BSA catalog #33105). 750,000 1st run copies were made of this edition. This version says that 36,760,000 copies of the Boy Scout Handbook have been printed since the 1st edition in 1910. There have been many editions, printings, revisions, & cover changes since that time, even some shape changes. In addition to the standard softcover, the 1998 version can be found spiral-bound, in hardcover, & with a leather cover. Immediately prior to the release of the 1998 version, was a mini-booklet of the rank requirement checklists printed in color on heavy cardstock. This booklet was passed out at the National Leadership Training Conference, held for all the BSA professionals in the country, in 1998, where the new edition of the handbook was a much-discussed topic. The 1st printing of the 1998 copyright version should increased in value in the years to come. This book will be sought after by Scouts & Scouters (of the time before, during, & eventually after this manual), as well as collectors of Scouting literature.Read full review
I am a scoutmaster and wanted another copy of the currant handbook, as I give copies to the new scouts. The local scout office is over 120 miles away and with the price of gasoline, the cheapest way to acquire another copy was on ebay. The book has all of the requirements and a place to have the leaders or parents note when a particular item was completed. All of the scouts are required to bring their book with them at their board of review. With this use of the book, a new copy is required for each boy.
This book has lots of useful information. It's easy to read. The pictures are helpful. Good for all ages.
