About this product

Product Information

In the late '70s Ted Simon rode 63,000 miles over four years through fifty-four countries in a journey that took him around the world. Through breakdowns, prison, war, revolutions, disasters and a Californian commune, he travelled into the depths of fear and reached the heights of euphoria. He met astonishing people and was treated as a spy, a welcome stranger and even a god. For Simon the trip became a journey into his own soul, and for many others - including bikers Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor - it provides an inspiration they will never forget. Brought up in England by a German mother and a Romanian father, Ted Simon found himself impelled by an insatiable desire to explore the world. It led him to abandon an early scientific career in favour of journalism, and he has worked for several newspapers and magazines on Fleet Street and elsewhere. Ted Simon is also the author of Riding Home and The Gypsy in Me .

Ted Simon is an awesome character, who shares his life with you.

IMHO, it's one of the best books in the world. Of course, I love motorcycle touring. Ted Simon is a journalist and writer who took an epic trip and wrote about it in a humble and honest fashion. Many who write about motorcycling are not especially good writers, but Simon is one of the best. Mostly it's about the people he meets, so even if you're not especially into bikes, you'll enjoy this book.

  • Top critical review

A lot about the rider and a little about his motorcycle.

If you like the stories of motorcyclists and their journeys, you will probably like it. I was somewhat disappointed because it seemed that the author/rider was more interested in himself than what was going on around him. There is very little detail of the motorcycle once underway considering it was his mechanical soulmate and his sole means of transportation. He seems to regard it more as an appliance than being a part of him for tens of thousands of miles. I don't want to give the story away and it is definitely worth reading, particularly if you like vintage motorcycles like I do. I just expected the motorcycle to have a bigger part than just being as the song says, "A Horse with no Name".

  • Good read.....

Interesting read, especially when you consider when and what he rode on the trip. Mr. Simon does have a sense of humor that is through out the book.
