Useful addition to a toolkit
This core plug installer is not too expensive, nicely made from good quality materials and a credible attempt at offering a kit to assist installing core plugs with the engine still in the car. It does not completely replace the large socket on the end of an extension DIY insertion tool (pic), but is useful alongside it. One thing that is really important- the core plug must be a snug fit- I had to add "O" rings to the closest tool in the set to hold the core-plug on (pic). Kept falling off otherwise and is not centred so it will not insert straight. Another thing- instructions say to use "a hammer". One really needs a fairly heavy hammer or mallet to give a few accurate, powerful blows. Working on the floor with little room, a 1.5 kg/ 3 lb club mallet did the job. I think a copper head of ... Not the greatest
I was a tech for a while in the past and an avid DIYER. I tried installing a freeze plug on the pass side of an OHV explorer toward the back (side plug). First of all you need a very shallow freeze plug(not more than 1/4" deep) or the tool will strike the rim of the plug. I don't think hitting the plug like that is a good idea, and they are supposed to countersink just a bit. I was not able to get the freeze plug in and I didn't think the angle was so steep. I don't want to blame the tool 100%, because it isn't an ideal setup, but the way it moved didn't allow me to apply the blows square to the plug with the hammer. Again the angle may have been a bit too much. It may work perfect on a V engine outside of the car. If you are replacing in the car YMMV. I noticed there is a tool that ... I noticed there is a tool that connects to an air hammer, that may work well with these dies. Seriously, I think a swivel, washer and socket would do a better job. Ended up using a metal expandable plug, works fine now for 5K miles. I can also easily drain the block. These are available at NAPA and the machine shop guy said they offer them as an option to customers who want to drain their block.

Made very well, extremely solid. The removal tool is a bit pointless, but installing new freeze plugs perfectly has never been easier. Fits a large range of plug sizes, and can reach into awkward places.
