I purchased this as a gift for a friend who vacationed In Hawaii recently. She is very interested in its’ history. James Michener (the author) makes you feel like you have a PhD after you complete one of his books. He tells compelling stories of fiction based on historical fact. “Painless history”. This book came to me in excellent condition. Very impressed! Thanks!

Growing up I was a typical male child of the 50's. I played sports, was into cars and drag racing, and enjoyed rock music. The one thing I didn't do was read. I was dating a girl in the 9th grade who was carrying around this huge book with her everywhwere she went. One day I asked her about the book and she handed it to me. It was Hawaii, by some guy named James Michener, who I had never heard of in my life. I looked the book over and asked her what class it was for. She told me it was just 'fun reading'. I had never heard the expression and thought it an odd pairing of words kind of like army intelligence, government worker, and jumbo shrimp. She told me I was missing an entire world of enjoyment. I told her I see it it came to the movies. When she finished the book she gave it to me and dared me to read the first 100 pages, which I did. I have no idea what happened to the girl, but I know the book made a big, big impression on me. I laughed. I cried. I even enjoyed myself. The worst was the day I read the last page. It had been many years since I'd thought of Hawaii. Years ago, I read all of Michener's books, but Hawaii is still my favorite. I saw it the other day on EBay, so I bid and got it. I am on page 101 and loving it all over again. I plan to give it to my 26 year old daughter when I am finished. Read the first 100 pages, I dare you. GaryRead full review
I FIRST BOUGHT AND READ THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN YEARS OLD, 45 YEARS AGO. EVEN THOUGH IT IS A NOVEL IT HAS A LOT OF TRUE HISTORY ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND AND THEIR CULTURE. WE WENT TO HAWAII, THE ISLAND OF KONA, THE LARGEST, LAST SEPTEMBER (2007) AND I WISHED THAT I HAD READ THE BOOK MORE RECENTLY. WELL, WE HAVE A TRIP SCHEDULED TO MAUI THIS DECEMBER (2008) AND I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FIND THIS BOOK ON HALF COM FOR $1.75. I HAD LOOKED IN BORDERS BOOK STORE EARLIER AND THE PAPERBACK EDITION WAS $17.00, SO THOUGHT I'D LOOK ON EBAY BEFORE PURCHASING. THE BOOK I RECEIVED IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND CAN SURELY BE HANDED DOWN TO SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY WHO IS INTERESTED. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE AND WILL CONTINUE TO SEARCH HALFCOM FOR BOOKS AND MUSIC, WHICH I HAVE ALSO PURCHASED ON HALFCOM, WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS. HALFCOM IS A GREAT PLACE TO PURCHASE CD'S AND BOOKS WHICH ARE NO LONGER FOR SALE IN THE STORES, AND SOLD A VERY GOOD PRICES.Read full review
This book is wonderful. Traces the history of Hawaii beginning with how it was formed. While book is fiction, Michener is noted for his extensive research so it makes it fun to read without getting bogged down with dry history.
