A radical departure from the heavy blues rock of Cream that put Clapton on the map in America. His solo debut has him changing to Fender Stratocaster guitar with a thinner yet still biting tone which took many fans aback. He stills plays magnificently but concentrates more on his singing than guitar prowess. He recruits a crackerjack team of backing musicians from Oklahoma which includes Leon Russell on piano, Rita Coolidge & Bonnie Bramlett on backing vocals, Carl Radle bass,Jim Gordon drums & Bobby Whitlock keyboards. these 3 would go on to become the Dominoes on Clapton's following album Derek & the Dominoes, Layla. There's also a horn section which boasts Bobby Keys on sax who went on to work with the Rolling Stones. Last but not least is Delaney Bramlett who was a class act roots rocker who co wrote & produced the album but was usurped by the record label who had the gifted Tom Dowd produce the album more to the label's liking. The gem of this deluxe edition is the Bramlett produced album which has a more soulful mix that many have preferred over the original release. Both versions are great in their own right. Don't hesitate to get this! Read full review

I must confess, I have not listened to the Bramlett remestered album or the never heard before outakes and non lp tunes. I'm saving it for new years like a fine champagne! I'm rating it Excellent based on the very special Sentiment, Awe and Memories this album etched on a 13 year old guitar students mind in the winter of 69/70. I'ts kind of a seasonal traditional winter treat to be enjoyed with dry sherry and someone you like to kiss. scb (461 ocean blvd. has been released as a deluxe also, thats a summer treat!)
good shape plays fine
