Rent is a beautiful and touching story the story of 8 friends in 1989 dealing Love, Life and AIDS in the crime ridden section of Manhattan's Alphabet City. ROSARIO DAWSON, as the a seductive stripper Mimi give and excellent performance in a new twist on the character of Mimi. ANTHONY RAPP as Mark, an aspiring filmmaker and ADAM PASCAL as Roger, the struggling singer/songwriter reprise their roles from the original cast of the Broadway Mega- Hit. Both Rapp and Pascal give flawless performances. TAYE DIGGS, as Benny, their former roommate and the current landlord. The cast highlight is WILSON JERMAINE HEREDIA as Angel, the high fashion charismatic HIV positive transvestite. JESSE L. MARTIN, from TV's "Law & Order" plays Collins. He sings a touching rendition of the reprise of "I'll Cover You". IDINA MEZEL, plays Maureen the rebellious Bi-Sexual performance artist. TRACIE THOMS, plays a lawyer and lover of Maureen. RENT: You either like it or dislike it. My first experience was the stage version in Toronto in 1998. I walked away loving the music but not "getting" the story. 8 years later, I bought the film version (after reading about it and the story line) and loved the music and story. In 2006, I revisited the stage version in Kitchener and discovered why I didn't get the story the first time (and neither did some "first-timers" around me). The premise is great but the script is poorly done. You need to read about the story before viewing it. I heard from "first-time" viewers of the DVD that they didn't totally "get it" either. But this CD is the music ... which is what sells the musical ... over and over and over. J. Larson tapped into a new world of music for a new generation and won. But the script struggled (apparantly it was way worse in the original workshop script version). I think this is also why the CD sells far better than the DVD. The music.Read full review
YOU KNOW ITS FUNNY.WHEN YOU SEE A BROADWAY SHOW YOU OF COURSE HAVE YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS AND YOUR " ITS OK MOMENTS ". THE NICE THING ABOUT RENT, THE MOVIE IS THAT IT TOOK ALL OF THE PARTS OF THE PLAY THAT WERE NOT THE MOST MEMORABLE, BUT STILL WERE GREAT, AND BROUGHT THEM RIGHT UP ALONG SIDE OF THE SHOWSTOPPING NUMBERS! THE TANGO MAURENE FOR INSTANCE IS SO BEAUTIFUL ON THE BIG SCREEN AS APPOSED TO THE BROADWAY PLAY.THE ONE THING I MUST SAY IS THAT WHEN YOU GO FROM THE BIG SCREEN TO THE TELESET IT DOES LOOSE THE FEELING THAT YOU MUST SEE IT DAILY AS I DID FOR QUITE A WHILE AND NEVER GOT SICK OF IT AND CREATED A NEW RENT SUPER FAN JEN A.K.A BAHARRABA.
I bought this soundtrack after seeing the movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I did't quite get the story at first, but I watched the feature-length documentary about RENT and Jonathan Larson (the composer/writer), and I "got it". (Now I'm sad that I discovered it too late to be able to see it on stage..) RENT is a beautiful story of a year in the life of 8 friends in New York City. The songs and compositions are absolutely amazing. The styles range from rock anthems to heartfelt ballads, from tango to gospel. This is a CD any RENT fan would love. Thank you, Jonathan Larson!
Blasphemy. I never caught the stage version of Rent. Although I was excited to hear it was being released as a movie, I somehow managed to miss it at the movie theater too and had to settle for viewing it on dvd. On first viewing I wasn't impressed. Other than "Seasons of Love", I didn't find the songs engaging and thought some of the lyrics were really cheesy. I definitely didn't appreciate the lazy, bohemian losers who wouldn't go out and get a friggin' job already so they could pay their rent like everyone else! But knowing how musicals sometimes take time to grow on you, I watched it again ... and again. I kept passing through the living room as other family members were watching and getting sucked in. Pretty soon I had to have the cd. Pretty soon I thought Larson was a genius after all. Pretty soon I was listening to the music obsessively, over and over, every day. Yeah, it grows on you. I defy anyone not to be moved by "Seasons" or "Without You" or the reprise of "I'll Cover You" or "No Day Like Today". *Sigh* I've fallen in love. (Even though I still think those lazy losers should get real jobs.)Read full review
