When I first heard it, I was blown away. Unfortunately, it didn't do as well as it should have on the charts. And that is her last hit to date. The brilliant "Night Moves" is far and away the best song off this album. The rest of the album pales in comparison, even though there are some enjoyable moments. Overall, the album is something of a generic listening experience. The songs tend to be forgettable, and Martin, while a good singer, often doesn't inject enough personality into the numbers. As a result, she sounds rather anonymous at times. That's probably a result of the weak material, because she sounds just great on "Night Moves." After "Night Moves," the other four songs on the first half of the album plain fall flat. They're well-produced, but they essentially go nowhere. The second half is better. Probably the next-best song on the album is the slick "Beauty or the Beast," which sounds like something Heart might have recorded. It's a stirring rocker, and sounds very '80s, but *good* '80s. There's also the sensual cover of "Move Closer," originally performed by Phyllis Nelson--it's a good song, but a tad on the boring side. The other songs on the second half are decent. It's a shame that Marilyn Martin didn't get the material she deserved on her debut. Is this a competent album? Yes. Is it a great album? No. Too many of the songs are just colorless and lack memorable hooks--they end up sounding like castoffs from more famous artists. If you like Marilyn Martin (and she is very talented), I suppose this album is worth checking out. But except for "Night Moves" (especially) and a couple of other songs, you can safely skip over most of the material here. I have to admit that I'm puzzled by all the glowing reviews I've seen of this album. They are the reason I bought the album, and I ended up being quite disappointed.Read full review
Marylin Martin has talent to burn. It is hard to believe her hit single "Night Moves" peak out at number 27 on American Top40 in February 1986 when it should have at least made it into the top 10. This is a very good album. Marylin is so underrated.

It is difficult to find this album on CD, so I was elated to find it at a very reasonable price. She has such an evocative voice, especially on “Night Moves” and “Body & The Beat”, so I highly recommend picking this up if you get the opportunity.

A gem of a album by a very under rated artist. Should have been a much bigger star. At least we have 2 solo albums a several soundtrack and compilation albums, that showcase her magnificent talent.

I bought this cd because I used to have it on cassette. Her next album barely registered on the top 200.Even with a Madoona penned song.
