There is nothing ground breaking or original about this cd. Its 70's country rock. Most of the songs could be on a Poco or Eagles album from that time and fit seamlessly. The lead vocals are first rate and the harmonies are excellent. The pedal steel is especially well done and expressive. Two songs were written by Dan Fogelburg. I prefer the version of Old Tennessee by Fools Gold to the solo version by Fogelburg. I had not heard this music in about 10 years. The cd hasn't been out of my player since I got it.
Two of this band's members played at a venue called Collinsville Park Ballroom in Collinsville, Illinois back in the 1970's with a guy named Michael McDonald. The band was called "The Guild" and they were house band on Thursday nights and had a large, loyal local following. McDonald went off to Steely Dan and Fool's Gold went off to be Dan Fogelberg's backup band. They're better than that, singing songs from the old CPB days like Sailing to Monterey and Rain Oh Rain has to make one wonder why they never made it as big as contemporaries in the same vein like the Eagles, POCO etc;, the lyrics, vocals and instrumentals of Denny Henson, Tom Kelly et al; are every bit as strong as the aforementioned bands. Lending credence to the belief of luck and right place at right time means everything. Fool's Gold should be a household name too. IF you can find this disc, buy it, it'll become one of your favorites.Read full review
