What is it like to go through the meat grinder of universal fame and come out the other side? With MIND GAMES, John Lennon answers that question. And his tuneful response will surprise fans and skeptics alike. Anyone familiar with Beatlemania and Fab Four mythology should abandon such stilted preconceptions. Listen with open ears. Listen and you will hear the sound of life and love, of sorrow and joy and -- above all, an infectious sense of optimism. Here is wisdom gained by living fearlessly and questioning assumptions. "Love is the answer," John sings on the very first track, immediately forging a direct link to the musical legacy he had spent years rejecting. Hear Lennon at his most strident; demanding political awareness on "Bring On The Lucie (Freda Peeple)." Listen to him rock flat out on "Meat City," slicing through the back beat with one of the brashest voices in rock n' roll. Then marvel as he sweetly intones the haunting melody of "I Know (I Know)." Lennon wrote, recorded and self-produced MIND GAMES in 1973, at the beginning of a long, nearly two-year, separation from Yoko Ono. He was also facing imminent deportation from the United States, orchestrated by the paranoid and criminal enterprise known as the Nixon White House. And yet, MIND GAMES does not wallow in self-pity nor traffic in mindless good cheer. All true artists must have the courage to bare their souls. Time and again John Lennon strips himself emotionally naked before us, delving deep inside his pain -- into the very heart of darkness. But, fear not. In a metaphorical reflection of his transcendental trip through Beatlemania, we emerge the better for having lived and listened. Not many albums can lay claim to such lofty notions. See if you agree.Read full review
