Myra Hess, aside from being a valiant woman and courageous humanitarian in World War II, was one of the most musicianly of pianists in the past century. Her depth in slow movements of concertos and sonatas had an inner spiritual probing similar to that of Schnabel, while her virtuosity throughout was superior. Her "live' recordings may vary in quality, often with the piano unflatteringly close and not in ideal balance with the orchestra. Still, all of her recorded output is treasurable, and this album features several in the finest sound accorded her.
