Ronnie Montrose is a kind of guitarist that you buy his CDs first and ask questions later. Point blank. For the unfamiliar with this rock maestro - he is a kind of a blend of Eddie Van Halen and David Gilmour, and he sounds terrific. Amazing sound quality. Those heart stopping bends and vibrattos would make Gilmour blush and Hendrix proud. Buy without thinking. With that being said, i will also note that this one is not the best album of Ronnie Montrose. To my knowledge - the album "Speed of Sound" represents this guitar master much better. Cause in about half the tracks Ronnie seems to be more laid back and less into technical performance prowess, rather relying on some kind of a general effect. To my humble musical opinion, it appears that a good number of tracks does not have a strong lead, sounding rather like something that he made for future jam sessions. Maybe so, maybe i am wrong. Yet it is exactly that absence of power lead in many tracks which detracts from the 5 stars for this disc. Still, sound quality is astonishing and Ronnie is one the very best in the genre. Many Montrose CDs are very rare, and the best of them are Hellishly expensive, so yes - i definitely would recommend this to a friend. Especially to all the guitar friends.Read full review
I grew up in the Bay Area - San Francisco, and in my teen years must have seen Montrose in concert 6 or 8 times. An old high school buddy shared Ronnie's "Bearings" CD (a lot of acoustic work) with me, and I was intrigued by it enough to purchase "Music From Here". It is very good...almost undefinable in it's overall style. A little experimental, non-formulaic, and mostly electric, I hear hints of Joe Satriani, a tiny bit of Neal Schon maybe?, even a trace of early Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. But don't get me wrong, Montrose is not a copy-cat. The guitar work is as great as you might expect from a guy like who has been playing all his life, amd there's some great bass guitar work too. It is a CD that I keep coming back to. Very listenable as road trip music, and as "mind-provoking" background when working in the office. Careful though, you may want to crank it!Read full review
