"Fearless" is simply Hoyt at his best, a listening pleasure from start to finish. "Southbound" is a little more hit-and-miss, but includes two of my favorite Axton songs, the achingly beautiful "In A Young Girl's Mind" and a great duet with Linda Ronstadt, "Lion In the Winter." And who couldn't like "No No Song," with help from Cheech and Chong - superior, in my view, to Ringo's hit version. "Fearless" has too many high points to list them all, but includes "Evangelina", Flash of Fire" and "An Old Greyhound", plus Hoyt's smooth, cool take on Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay". These were Axton's two biggest selling albums, and when combined with the "Less Than the Song/Life Machine" 2-for-1, also highly recommended, represent all of his A&M material, when Hoyt was at his creative peak. Hoyt Axton always deserved more credit - and more hits - than he got, and this collection is exhibit A in proving the case. For lovers of good music, this CD is worth many times over what you'll pay for it. And Australia's Raven Records does a stand-up job with the booklet and notes, too. Buy this, and start loving Hoyt as much as I do!Read full review
