As the cover already hints at, the 92 PANTERA output "Vulgar Display Of Power" is the proverbial fist in the face. Right in the middle of the slowly ebbing Death Metal wave this band hit with a pure power album. The music on "Vulgar..." can hardly be put into one category. When listening to the songs too many impressions assault you. I guess that I can best classify the music as Modern- or Neo-Thrash Metal. While "Vulgar..." does not really put any emphasis on the speed that plays such an important role in classical Thrash, but rather fat, grooving, super heavy riffs! Listen to "Mouth For War" or the brutally grooving track "Walk". The music stomps everything into the ground. And the hefty riffs are complemented by the manic screamign of fronter Phil Anselmo and a thundering double bass inferno by drum animal Vinnie Paul. Compared to many of their Thrash Metal colleagues from the Eighties, PANTERA have a lot more to offer in musicianship. Guitarist Diamond Darrell, who some of you might know, does not save on aggressive and 100% fitting solos. The bone-dry sound adds its part to make songs like the fast "Rise" or the bitter-sweet grenade "This Love" even more brutal. Even the closing semi-ballad "Hollow" never sounds sappy at all. Each second oozes with power, with energy that grips everything and everybody. Suiting the music are the lyrics, which make obvious that the PANTERA guys had a lot of anger and frustration in them when writing this album. The mostly quite personal lyrics deal with hate, false friends or the bitter reality of our society. The listener will get a lot of variety on "Vulgar...". Almost all following PANTERA albums lacked just that. Besides MACHINE HEAD's "Burn My Eyes" and SEPULTURA's "Chaos A.D." "Vulgar Display Of Power", to my ears, is one of the three most intense longplayers of the early Nineties. At least if you look at the evolution of Metal in the following years, one could raise the theory that not few of today's Nu-Metal scene has at least listened to albums like this. Even though with rather limited success. "Vulgar Display Of Power" is a hammer without fillers.Read full review
One of the best bands around at that time made excellent music, the riffs, solos, lyrics and just the music is amazing people need to look into pantera even more songs to check out: Walk No Good (Attack the Radical) A New Level Hollow Those songs are really good however i can listen to the whole album even if you've never hard of them just give them a try at least if your fan of metal or a guitarist it will get you in the mood to play guitar. :)
Hi Guys, Well, Pantera was a mamoth influence on the Metal scene in the early 90's, thrashing their way through with big noise, heavy rhythms, and a killer attitude. I would recommend this as an excellent driving accompaniment, for the ultimate mean thrash racer, at neighbour annoying volumes is always best. This is one of my all-time favorite old-school metal albums. Rock on
This album was released in 1992 when I was a mere 11 years old. I still remember the sheer energy of the music and how exhilarating it was and I can honestly say it still sounds as fresh today as it ever did. This is one of those albums where every track is a masterpiece in it's own right from 'Walk', which is one of the best anthems of the rock world to date, through to 'This love' which I can assure you is no ballad! No sir, there are no 'B side' type fillers on this album. I bought this CD as my original was on cassette and I'm replacing everything one by one. I my opinion this is a definite 'must have' album whether you remember it or not. So even if you're a younger person who listens to 'new rock' I would strongly recommend you get this album as I can pretty much guarantee this has influenced all the newer bands around. Oh yeah, this isn't exactly radio friendly as the lyrical content is quite strong and it does contain obscenities in the song titles too. Children wouldn't pick up on the darker themes but there's no getting away from the swearing - there's lots of it. All in all I can honestly say this is the best album Pantera released in probably the best era for this type of music. Highly recommended!!!Read full review
If you like your music heavy, hard, fast and full of deep bass and drums then this is for you. The voice, sort of singing/shouting, is an aquired taste but you get to like it after a while. I have rated this a good rather than excellent as there is too much swearing. I cannot play this in the car with the kids (all under 10) listening even thought they quite like the music. I don't like the swearing either.
