I have 3 Pioneer A/V Receivers, a VSX-1022K and 2 VSX-1021K models These receivers have provided superior performance, and easy setup - especially speaker balancing. My most recent purchase was for a VSX-1021K to replace a Yamaha. The Yamaha had provided years of excellent service; however, it was purchased before HDMI was available. I selected the Pioneer based on my past experience, the reliability, and the value for the money which the Pioneer models provide. We connect both modern and legacy equipment (eg. Laser Disc), and the Pioneer handles them all.

Difficult to judge if my experience was just bad luck. I connected audio-visual machine to my 5 speakers, projection system and satellite receiver and all worked for the first 2 hours. Then the system shutdown but power stayed on. I tried different things and system resumed play until I stopped it. Over next few days, same pattern except the time until system stopped was progressively shorter and reboot time longer. Finally, system only worked for a few minutes. Took it in for evaluation and learned mother board was cracked. Ended up buying a new Sony A/V receiver and all is right with world.

This is not your everyday receiver. It takes a bit of audiophile knowledge to get it to do what it is capable of doing. If you are not an diehard audiophile you may want to find something a bit more consumer friendly. If you do have the knowledge, you are going to love this machine! I am a musician and sound clarity is as important to me as timing. I got the pioneer speakers to go with this and the sound blows away some of the more expensive sets that I have heard. The sound is crisp and clear and the percussion is rich and warm. The set up will take a little while and much longer for the novice. Cords are varied and plentiful and if you are not careful easy to cross. On the other hand every plug in is clearly marked and easily readable. I am not going to go into all the specs as they are readily available through a google search. I am going to say that the capabilities of this system have exceeded my expectations and for a grand total of just over a grand for the receiver, speakers and cables, it is not bad at all considering every room is filled with music and I can control the machine with my iphone or other mobile device from the pool area, (or anywhere else in the house) very sweet. Over all I think if you are technically challenged you should get someone to hook it up and explain it to you, or you are headed for some serious frustration. I am a pretty tech savvy guy and it took me a while to figure it out. (I had to call in some help). Many of you younger or more tech savvy folks will have no problems. Can't say enough about the quality of the device and the component speakers that I purchased. I am a very satisfied customer. My only caveat is the complexity of the manual. Once I figured it out I was impressed.Read full review
Good sound quality and jam packed with options. Still have to refer to the manual sometimes if the wrong button on the remote is pressed by someone and it gets into a strange mode.

This was built in 2012 and I have had two of these myself. When they came out, I was so impressed with this unit that I bought six more for friends and family. They are all still going super strong and all 8 have NEVER had a problem. I leave the one in my bedroom on 24-7 & always have since 2012 when I set her up. I LOVE Pioneer but I had always bought the higher end Elite modes but to tell you the truth, I honestly couldn't tell the difference at all between the VSX-1020 and the Elite series 2 models above it. I have a tru 7.1 system with Def Tech BP-2080's as mains, PSB Alpha 2's in the rear and sides, Definitive Technology CS1000 center and a Velodyne 12" 1200watt sub. This system is built for clarity, not volume although you can shake the house if you wanted. Best deal out there still if you ask me. Built like a tank and hard hitting clean music and movies.Read full review
