Good things about this Camera *----------------------------* Great continues shots! It really works great! Beautiful warm live pictures! Great for night pictures! Very simple to use (even for amateurs). Feels comfortable in your hands. Has a built in flash. Easy to find what features you need in the menus. Lenses are cheaper than other major brands. Uses AA batteries.(Where ever you are you can find ones just standards). Great Features Just great you have every thing you need. Very wise buy as for Value for money. Bad things *------------------------* Doesn't have a tilt screen. No view for face recognition. (there is a recognition but you don't see it). Screen is not the best at this level. Live view is not as good as other brands. Video quality is not so good. Good for *------------------------* Portrait pictures! Low light pictures! Great for nature pictures. Not good for *------------------------* Under water pictures... I don't really know yet... Conclusion *----------------------* After having an old Nikon coolpix 5700 for many years (great image quality), I decided to try this time with DSLR! I had a low budget so I was looking for something in the entry class DSLR. I checked the Nikon and Canon competing camera's, Not just that I found that they more expensive! I found out they offer less features and eventually I pay for the name than for the actual product! After checking in eBay again and again I also found that Pentax K-x is looses a lot more from it's original value as a second hand camera.I bought a used camera who did less than 7000 actuation's and it is just great! Pentax K-x has a lot more to offer than cameras that are priced 20%-30% Higher that is what I had in mind, and I think I got it right! I am a karate instructor and I use this camera mainly to take pictures of our lessons. Perfect Camera for the price... I was deciding between NIKON D5000 (My daughter has one, $849 by June/09) and a Pentax K-x ($549 by Feb/2010), almost similar cameras. I'm really satisfied with the 4.7 fps continuous shooting up to fill the buffer (According to specs, 17 pictures), however, using a 4Gb, 30Mbps class 6 SANDISK extreme memory I'm getting up to 22/25 continuous shooting. The major concern in the reviews was the lack of focus points... I don't found any problem with this. I just switch to one point AF when taking action pictures. A very Powerful and convenience feature is that use Normal AA batteries. That means one charger less and you can find batteries any place in the planet. I get more that 1800 shots with the original Lithium batteries and approximately 500 shots with regular 2500 MAh niMH rechargable batteries. So, I decided to buy (2) kits 2700 mAH rechargeable fresh batteries and keep one Lithium kit for emergencies. Very easy to use, very intuitive and easy to use menu, camera itself is very light and looks almost exactly like my Fuji Finefix S8000fd (Point & Shoot, prosumer). In general, a little noisy when Auto-focusing with a Tele-zoom (28-300mm Promaster). Shooting is also a little more noisy that NIKON but I like the sound when taking 4.7 FPS... is like music for my ears. Live View is slow for focusing and has a little delay with reality, can also hot the camera and stop working... Manual says 5 minutes is the maximum recommended time to use Live View. That's OK for me, I use Live View for rare occasions. NIKON D5000 has a Swivel option not available in K-x, no big deal. When in live view there's a continuous noise you can hear really close to the camera, but the manual says is normal. I made some small Videos in HD (720p) with mono audio and quality is OK.. Do not expect AF or Auto-exposure when doing videos, if you start the video a f8 (interior light) and requiere less aperture (Let's say a Sunny day video), you must stop recording and adjust Aperture again. In other words, any small point and Shoot can do better videos and nothing to do compare to a really HD Video camera. Taking pictures with High ISO 3200 / 6400 is an excellent plus... Noise reduction is amazing. I never seen that kind of quality at so high ISO ratings. Shake reduction is based in the Camera Body, so Lenses are cheaper than NIKON D5000 version and I can use lenses from many other camera models, even the Film SLR lenses. Shake reduction produce some blurry images with more that 100mm and under 1/125... I think that optical option is better (point for NIKON D5000). Another only minor concern is my teleZoom lens is heavy compared to the camera weight, so after 1 hour using the camera with a 28/300mm camera you feel your hands tired because of this unbalance in weight. CONCLUSION: Very easy to use, too powerful for that small price, very versatile because the using of AA batteries and all the previous PENTAX normal lenses (Just AF required). Excellent quality results at high ISO and 4.7 fps... Live View and Videos with some limitations, but in general OK compare to other DSLRs. I'm really having fun with this new camera, even is not a Professional DSLR is an excellent and affordable replace for a Point & Shoot and compete with many High End DSLR in some points.Read full review
Well, more excited about getting this camera than anything i can think of in the last year or so, i ripped into the box and was taken by this beautiful camera. At first i just rolled it around an looked it over. When i went to flip it over and put batteries in it made a strange noise as if something was loose, not unattached, but loose which made me very uneasy. I fired it up and took some shots and it seemed to work perfect so i decided to write Pentax and look around the web, turns out this is perfectly normal its just the shake reduction device inside. So after attemping to use some settings on it (im convinced ill be 85 before i figure them all out) i found if fairly easy to simply take pictures and also to change between flash, no flash, change iso etc.. So i love it and its certainly a great camera for anyone wanting to start using DSLR's and never having one, yet more than enough features for anyone wanting to produce professional like photos. Low light shots look amazing!Read full review
After using the K-x for a couple of weeks, I announced to my wife "If I weren't already married to you, I'd marry this camera because I love it so much!" I've now taken the camera on two trips and taken about 2,000 shots with it, and I can honestly say I'm even more pleased with it than I thought I'd be. Even though the company that makes it (Pentax) might be having some financial issues that is limiting the number of retailers who carry their line of cameras, the quality of the K-x is simply excellent. In particular, here is what I like about the K-x: 1. It's smaller and lighter than almost any DSLR on the market. And even though this is the case, it still has a very sturdy "build"; 2. Its image quality is excellent; 3. I already owned quite a few Pentax lenses and an external flash, and they all worked perfectly on the K-x; 4. It wasn't difficult at all to figure out how to use, and once you learn that hitting the Info button takes you a comprehensive menu where you can adjust just about everything (shake reduction, digital filters, auto exposure metering, highlight and shadow correction, JPEG vs. RAW, resolution, etc.), you'll love how quickly you can make common adjustments; 5. With the image stabilization (IS) inside the camera, you don't have to buy lenses equipped with IS (which makes them bigger and more expensive). This is a big advantage over Canon and Nikon; 6. I was tired of all-black cameras, so I bought the K-x in white -- and I think it looks absolutely beautiful. What I don't like: 1. It would be nice if it had the water- and dust-tight seals that its big brothers from Pentax have, but those other cameras are much heavier and cost at least twice as much; 2. I wish the kit lens came with a lens hood, because the last Pentax camera/lens I bought did indeed come with a hood; 3. The K-x does have "live view" (like the point-and-shoot cameras have), but I find it to be only somewhat useful, because it takes soooooo long to auto-focus on the subject. To be fair, almost all DSLRs that have live view take far longer to auto-focus than if you simply use the viewfinder. The bottom line, though, is that you simply can't beat the K-x for the price. I highly recommend this camera!Read full review
First of all I must say this is my first dslr, so i can't actually compare it with other cameras. But nevertheless, this definitely is wonderful camera. I bought this because I love photography, and i finally managed to buy dslr, and move from point & shoot cameras. And what a shock that was... Let me just say from the moment i got it, my wife's accusing me of totally neglecting her... All i do is shoot, read photography manuals and literature, play with shoots in camera raw and photoshop, and then just admiring my beautiful photos. The camera itself looks very solid, it fits my hand perfectly, and overall quality is great. Photos are excellent. Very sharp, vivid colors (all photos are taken with kit objective). Even when shooting in low light with high iso, there is very little noise. Burst mode rocks. I mostly used it while shooting groups of people, and not once has happened that i don't get at least one great photo. One more thing i love is long exposure (10+ seconds). It makes wonderful photos, not to mention all possibilities you get if you're creative. Can't say anything about video capturing, since i don't use it at all, but it seems people are not satisfied with it. It uses standard AA batteries, and while some people don't like it i love it. 2 sets of rechargeable batteries will cover every photoshooting. So, if you are a photography amateur, or you are buying 1st dslr, and want to get away from those compact toys, this is perfect camera for it.Read full review
