I've been a happy Linux user for some time, and when my mother came to visit over the holidays, I found her struggling with her Windows 8 laptop. It was once again loaded with malware, and even after cleaning it for her, I cringed as I watched her try to get it to do what she wanted. It spent half its resources trying to update with Microsoft, making it slow and unresponsive, the hard drive just churning its guts out! I always hated when my machine did what Microsoft wanted it to do, instead of what I wanted it to do. She had to click everything two or three times to get it to open. Playing something from Netflix often required a reboot. It always seemed to be preoccupied with some other subroutine. I suggested that she let me back everything up and load a Linux operating system on it, but understandably she was wary of learning a new system. So, after she went back home, I went to Ebay and spent a couple of hours researching used laptops and the eBay'rs that sold them, settling on this Dell. It ranked well with CNET and some other sites, has a full numeric keyboard, a big screen, plenty of hard drive space and memory, and most importantly, no operating system. I had already researched the price of a new battery and power supply for this model, so I ordered those along with a wireless mouse and decorative neoprene sleeve. Photos showed that there were some scuffs on the lid, so I ordered a nice skin to cover them up. The total bill was about $250 and it was all at my house within a week. I loaded the Linux Mint operating system (completely free and available online!) and spent a couple of hours configuring programs and some shortcuts to the websites my mother uses: Facebook, Pinterest, Netflix, etc. Linux automatically loads drivers for all the hardware and everything works perfectly! Linux requires about half the memory, hard drive, and processor resources that Windows does, and is completely immune from viruses and malware so you don't need an antivirus wet blanket slowing things down even further, and the code is more cleanly written (every Android phone and tablet on the market runs on Linux). My new(ish) Dell laptop therefore is as fast as lightning, opening programs and loading images as soon as I click on them! The hard drive light only flickers when I ask it to do something and stops the instant it's finished. The only tracking software comes in the form of Facebook and Google. No cold Microsoft fingers digging through my mother's personal information. I could go on and on, but I'll spare you. Leave it to say that I'm not a fan of big brother. Long story short, once my mother adapted to the new operating system (Mint looks and works very much like Win XP or 7), she loved it and asked me to convert her old laptop to Linux so she can give it to her sister! Love making mama happy! The laptop was exactly as described with no surprises and I am very happy with my purchase and would do it again.Read full review

The hinges on the monitor of my laptop broke so I needed to replace them but trying to order all the parts needed was getting too costly. This Dell was exactly what I needed. I now have a great looking and working laptop! Thank you!
