If you like scooby doo, x-files, the monster of week, earthbound stories, open minded sexuality and soap opera like drama(who's sleeping with who) then I would recommend Torchwood to you. This show is intended for adult audience compare to its family hearted, time traveling sister show Doctor Who. Most current series Doctor Who fans are turned off by this show however it is to be taken for face value, enjoyable, fun, darkier, sexier entertainment. I see this show as a earthbased Star Trek, Captain Jack as Kirk, Ianto as a Riker, Toshiko as Spock, Owen as Bones and of course Gwen. I have yet to appreciate the chemistry of the group, there is "everyone for themselves" philopshy. Torchwood is more like a disfunctional family than a team. This concept is perhaps intended for the show but its really a handicap for the viewer. Unfortunately you care about the stories and who is Captain Jack but not the rest of the team. Torchwood series 2 which is currently airing is seeming to fill in those empty voids as a viewer which means better series and improving show. The future looks bright for Torchwood.Read full review
Better description; as described, there were few but minor scratches, but on disc 1 I got maybe 20 minutes of viewing before skips and freezing started in; would not allow me to access the 2nd episode on disc 1. On inspection, there appears to be a solid ring (looks worn out) about an inch in from edge. Discs 2-6 played fine. Disc 7 played great up to the middle of final episode, then it to froze, so couldn't see ending.

I'll start off by saying that this is the third occasion that I've tried to write a review on this product containing a season's worth of superior writing, acting, and character development. Certainly Torchwood's spell-checking capabilities wouldn't be bringing their computers to a crashing halt as eBay's utility continually does mine... That's not to say that Torchwood doesn't have its own problems. The characters are all human, to begin with. None are the typical Hollywood program stereotypes. Even considering Captain Jack's unique qualities, he's a hero out of no mold. Each member of the team is allowed to develop and grow as though they are new people that we've just met - which they are - and to make an assumption about any one of them is to make an egregious mistake. As thew show goes on, you start to care about these people. The plots are all intelligently written. Don't go into a show and expect to guess the outcome. Yet they all contain sci-fi wizardry without the BS and action minus the overly used Matrix silliness. I.e., the shows are all both thoughtful and exciting at the same time. This program is a spin-off of the greatest science fiction television show ever - Doctor Who, which I've been watching since the mid-70s. But it has its own personality, its own uniqueness, its own great team of writers, producers, actors, and production staff. It is a joy to watch, over and over again... ...which is, of course, why I bought the set. The hours of intelligent, action filled entertainment, besides being simply a good watch, demonstrate what can be done within the sci-fi genre once one gets away from video-game inspired, old TV show inspired, and otherwise cliche inspired programming. This is something you want to see. What Science Fiction can be at its best.Read full review
I am a fan of Dr Who, and some other Sci-Fi television shows. This is a spin off of Dr Who, and follows Capt. Jack Harkness in his tenure at Torchwood, a super secret organization that deals with aliens, and their technology. It is not like Dr Who, in that the content is more adult oriented and isn't as family friendly as Dr Who. The series explores darker sides of humanity. The series is based in Cardiff, not London. I think the acting is pretty good. John Barrowman is quite captivating as Capt. Jack, and the rest of the ensemble cast each hold their own.
When I first started watching Torchwood Season One when it was broadcast I didn't get it because I had never seen the revamped Dr Who so much of the back story was lost on me and I quit watching after just a few episodes. But now, after becoming a Whovian, I get it. Seasons two and three are often played on BBC America but I have yet to see season one which is why I purchased the box set. I love that, like Dr Who, Torchwood is a character driven show with engrossing story lines that delve into the personalities of the characters. You get to know the members of the Torchwood team and their motivations for doing what they do and you really miss them when they die (oh yeah, spoiler alert!) There are strong female characters that actually take part in the stories and are more than just eye candy or a love interest. Speaking of love interest, homophobes need not apply because there is an abundance of dude on dude smooching. Capt. Jack swings both ways and one of the other guys at Torchwood is gay so, if that aspect of the story bothers you, then watch something else. I felt that it was an integral part of the story and wasn't bothered at all by it. Besides, Jack is kind of dreamy. In summary, Torchwood is good to watch on the heels of the new Dr Who series and might stand on its own although I had trouble following the premise (Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who by the way) without a background in the Whoverse. It is well written with comedy, intrigue, love, heartache, and good ole bad ass aliens.Read full review
