Taking it's track more from the book than the Chris Walken movie, the TV series Dead Zone is enjoyable entertainment. It's now going into its final season but the first season is worth a rewatch if you haven't seen it for a while, or worth a look if you haven't seen any of the show. Anthony Michael Hall finally shakes off his kid-actor past and turns in steady leading performances throughout (with only minor annoyances: the cane his character carries doesn't seem to be as necessary as it is decorative). The filming is engaging and fun, using decent CGI bullet-time effects to show the visions of the future; the plots are fairly uniform with well-written and interesting ideas that weave Johnny Smith's visions into reality and work the grey areas between. Some serious issues are introduced at times and dealt with fairly, and at other times the sense of absurd and humor comes through--one never detracts from the other. High-grade TV. Worth the time.Read full review
Back in 2001-2007, I was busy with other things while my wife watched the TV series, "The Dead Zone." At the time, she told me how good it was but I never watched the show. More recently, we heard that an episode name, "Plague," bore an uncanny resemblance to our current problems with the coronavirus. "Plague" appears in the 2nd season, so we bought that set of disks to see details. Wow, what a production! And another one from season 2 is "The Storm," which is every bit as good or better. My wife then insisted we get Season 1, so we could see how the series started and get the groundwork for all that followed. We've not been disappointed with Season 1, although a few episodes were not as good as the others from earlier in the year. This makes perfect sense from a production standpoint because it was obvious that the lavish spending couldn't take place for every program. All that said, "The Dead Zone" has been a revelation for me because of how well done it is and how well cast and photographed every scene has been. The production staff includes Michael Piller and his son Shawn, of Star Trek Next Generation (STNG) fame. There are a number of other staff and actors from STNG that we see in The Dead Zone which add further to its high quality. In short, I see the series as being "Twilight Zone on Steroids.." It's that good. --Jim Wheeler, Tucson, ArizonaRead full review

One of the best shows to air on television in a long time, The Dead Zone is a refreshing retelling of Stephen King's book of the same title and follows the adventures of a school teacher, Johnny Smith, who's life changed forever when a car accident left him in a coma for six years. When he awoke, he comes to realize he has a new gift, a psychic gift, that manifests when he touches something with a story to tell. The storylines are intense, the characters are well-written and beautifully acted, this is definitely one Series to add to anyone's list!
I like the original movie. I decided to watch the pilot on dvd. I was totaled inthralled. I decided to go buy the first season instead of slowly renting the dvds. The pilot is similar to the first movie but makes a few different choices. He has a group of friends that help him. Also the series illustrates that many of his choices in changing the future are not just black and white. He can't save everyone and sometimes he makes trades. We are slowly shown that Johny was given this power for a reason. The episode with the airplane rivating. I have ended up buying other season of the show. I enoy re-watching them.
I love this series! I was so sorry to see it end. Glad to have it on DVD.
