The water maps for this unit that come on a mircocard have not been updated since 2008 and will not be updated in the future. Why? Because in 2016 Garmin replaced the unit with a modern version where you can download the latest maps online and that has much better memory and technical features. Call Garmin to get the model number for the replacement unity. The new unit is considerably more expensive than the 487 device so if you can live with the old maps and older technical features the 478 device still provides good value for money.

I purchased my first Garmin 478 in 2007. We took a cross country trip and three days into the trip my wife got very ill she was passed out and was throwing up blood on the highway in the middle of nowhere. I revived her got back in the truck search for a hospital and we were 15 miles away from a hospital if it hadn't been for the Garmin I would've probably turned around and went back to the town and we came from which was about 100 miles back. At the hospital they told me that if I done that she probably would've passed away. So we named our Garmin angel. I think it's very easy-to-use and I use mine all the time. I also bought the sounder and transponder for my boat and we use it all the time and our boat on the marine mode I find it very helpful in lakes and rivers situations. We were down in Texas spring of 2012 and my truck got broken into, hey it's told my iPhone on my cameras and my GPS Garmin 478. I missed the Garmin 478 more than anything. So I had to replace my Garmin 478 with another unit. Unfortunately Garmin has seen fit to discontinue the Garman 478 which I think is a huge mistake because there a lot of people out there like me then have this in their boat also and none of Garmin's other items are compatible with the sounder units for the boats. Oh and one other small note I am sure with all the trips we've taken this is saved me and my wife from getting a divorce.Read full review
The GPSMAP 478 GPS has all the features necessary for motorcycle tourers and rallyists. Combined with a Garmin X30 antenna, and weather service, the GPSMAP 478 combined excellent routing, XM Radio, and NEXRAD weather capability. Routing is easy, and detail maps for North America fit within its memory. It uses the latest map system, so map updates are available. Sadly, it is discontinued, so you'll probably pay list or more fro it used on eBay. But it is worth it.
This staff is great. I put onto my cruising bike, and went for long touring. The map is not very updated, but it is a great advantage to know where the rain would be. I could choose the different way to avoide wetty riding, or prepared before got wet. It's not touch screen type, but same as handy GPS which I used to use. and the visibility under heavy sunshine is perfet. And credibility for the vibration, weather is excellent. Of course, I enjoyed XM radio, too. I got suction cup mount and put onto the wind shield, and it worked perfectly.
