Who would have ever thought that a television program such as The Monkees would go on to become such a phenomenally successful franchise? The Season 1 DVD boxed set is out of this world. It is a great thrill to experience the good times of the mid to late 60s with Michael Nesmith, David Jones, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz. All 32 episodes from the complete first season are included in this remarkable collection. There is no doubt that this show was truly innovative for its time; kind of like 'A Hard Day's Night' for television. The stories are well executed; the songs fit perfectly within each episode, especially what were called the romps, which could now serve as prototypes for the modern music video. As a plus, this set also features the original pilot episode of the show that would eventually get it on the air during the 1966-1967 television season. And, there are even a series of Monkees commercials, as well. Because this program is so much fun and enjoyable after more than 40 years, it is no wonder that it deserved to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series. My favorite episode of the entire series, "Monkees On Tour', is featured here, too. Hey, hey, it's The Monkees on DVD! Great fun for all ages.Read full review
Looking for an easier way to have all my Monkees in one barrel, I decided to purchase this box set, now that I finally had the funds to do it, and the color quality is AMAZING! Brilliant color and good sound, all around quality I don;t find on many DVDs. The fact that it's DVD doesn't take away from the nostalgia aspect in that everything on it is amazingly 1960's still. I was thrilled with the packaging, and the fact that it makes for much easier storage! This is everything I thought it would be and more, and it is beyond excellent rating. This box set also makes it less time consuming to collect all the episodes! (I also purchased season 2 recently). Everything I expected! I am so happy with it, I could, um, cry.
I was utterly exhilerated when I received this item in the mail. It was not how I pictured it- it was better! The packaging was splendid as it came in the form of an old record player. It included every single episode from the first season (plus a pilot episode, commentaries by the boys and the directors, episode trivia, and those wonderful kelloggs commercials) Each episode is priceless and whimsical and I gurantee you it will bring back wonderful childhood memories of that shy and innocent Peter Tork, the dry-humored Mike Nesmith with the Texas drawl, the cute and comical Micky Dolenz, and that ladies-man Davy Jones equipped with a British accent and dreamy features. You will not be dissatisfied when you purchase this superb item!
The Monkees DVD was just perfect. I wanted to buy it because my mother loved the Monkees and passed that on to me. We had some episodes taped on VHS but I accidently taped over them. We had had that video since the 80's. So to make it up to my mother, I bought the first season. The picture and sound quality are great. I love the extra features (such as commercials, trivia, commentary, etc.) I can't wait to buy season two!
