Ginsberg's original poem "Howl" tends to fall upon modern readers as a series of unrelated scenes that are didactic at best and boring at worst. The new visual flare added by the graphic novel format really burns some images into the reader's mind, which forces them to re-examine "Howl" in a new and different way. Personally, I think readers should still read the black print on white page format before diving into the graphic novel, but it's definitely excellent supplimentary material for fans on the beats.
As a note to parents, this is NOT a graphic novel for children. Having gotten my disclaimer out of the way, this is the kind of book I will read over and over again. The illustrations of the narrator's descent into total madness are mindblowing. The re-invisioning of Ginsberg's masterpiece make for an excellent read. This is a must have for any poetry fan. I highly recommend this book.
