Bought this for son's summer HS Honors English reading requirement. Thought it might be a good idea to read it also. If you enjoy flowery self-absorbed narrative, an undercurrent of anti-war sentiment, and implied homoeroticism in a private all boys boarding chool during WWII, this is YOUR book. It wasn't mine. My son had the opportunity to compare notes / discuss with 20 other honors English students in his class...not a single one would admit to liking this book. The original plot device of a man returning to his school years after attending, and then a switch to him as a boy telling the story, suggests there may be some kind of resolution at the end when we switch back to the man who's learned or experienced something that changes him. That never happens. Why it appears on required reading lists is beyond me.Read full review
This is an excellent coming of age novel, set in 1942. I was apparently to young to read it when it came out, but it rings true today. Beautifully written. not to be missed, also good for adolescents. Actually it is an easy read and not too long.

This is a story about two friends during the start of the war. It was hard to start reading but after you get into it is was ok. The end is sad. Also war buff person would love it.
My daughter had to read this for an early college class upcoming..A classic book! So glad instructors still have the classics as required reading.
