First let me say I AM biased when it comes to Gwen Marston. I've taken one of her workshops, and she is a quiltmaker extraordinaire. Unpretentious, practical, no-nonsense. It's all about making a quilt - not marketing some new tool, or cute pattern, or promoting her next fabric line! In this 1996 book Gwen puts her great design sense to work, and shows you not only how to make 20 specific quilts using the classic four patch - but she also will set your own ideas spinning out of the exercise. Do as many of these as you can, in order if you like, and by quilt no. 5, you'll be an expert. By Quilt No. 20 - you'll be ready to teach others. and you'll be designing your own! Easy to follow along, excellent instructions, and just enough illustrations. If you like them agonizingly step by step, this may not be for you - as this book will ask you to use those brains, gal - and exercise your intellect as well! If I had to pick just one great beginning quilt book - this one would be it! Not just a great pattern book, a great experience! KarenQuiltsTexasRead full review
