I really loved this book. It kinda reminded me of "The story of Edgar Sawtelle". I think Sweetwater Creek held together till the end much better than "Edgar Sawtelle" The characters are very real, the girl, Emily, and her dog, Elvis have a rapport that is equal to only the very best of friends. Another one of my favorite characters is the maid, Cleta, & even though she has just a small role, she is so real, and someone we all should be so privilaged to have grown up with. It is such a beautiful story about the coming of age of a teen girl, and a profound friendship of her and her dog.
Ms. Siddons is a marvelous writer. I have read most of her books and have hated to see them end. This book is a coming of age story about a very isolated young girl teetering on the brink of womanhood. The process is complicated and hastened by the arrival of a college girl who stays with her family over the summer. It is an exquisite tale set against the backdrop of Southern culture. The characters are believable and loveable, and the plot holds up. Ms. Siddons' fabulous use of language adds a lot of texture and beauty to the story, but this is not a fast-paced drama. I highly recommend it.
I am an Anne Rivers Siddons fan and was very anxious to read this latest book. It lived up to my expecations of excellancy. Once again, set in the South she weaves a story about a young girl's life on growing up in a family of men (her mother walked out when she was young) and her insecurity with the rest of the world. Events changed drastically when a young woman came to live and work with the family and the story just takes off from there. This is one of those books that when once started is hard to put down until it is finished. Of course, I have found that true about most of her books in general. I would highly recommend this book.
Anne Rivers Siddon is my favorite author. I have read all but a couple of her earlier books. This book was good but different and not her best writing. Nevertheless, I can't pass up her books and I hope she continues to write for many years.
Just started to read some of her wonderful books.....where have I been??? This story was heart warming and I didn't want the book to end. I can't wait to read some other books by this talented author. You will agree when you read her work.
