This installment of Roger Corman's legendary Edgar Allen Poe adaptations displays the series' elements at their finest but with a significantly different flavor. Yes, the brilliant ensemble cast turns in deft performances, amid lavish costumes and sets, on a script far more clever than American International Pictures deserved. That's how all these movies are. But instead of the usual gloom and doom, this one was planned as a comedy, and the veteran actors each get to do a comic turn without cheap laughs. Don't be fooled by later look-alike re-makes and cheap knock-offs. This series of 60s productions is the real thing that, while individual releases vary in quality, has altogether stood the test of time. This one is a favorite of mine--and of my 16-year-old daughter!
"The Comedy of Terrors" storyline is in the style of Poe, with Vincent Price in a rare comedic role, and the script abounds with both overt and subtle one-liners throughout from the entire cast. "The Raven" has comedic moments and is a good pairing that picks-up the tale where the poem ends, with Boris Karloff as the superlative bad guy with a droll sense of wordplay. The prolific master storyteller Richard Matheson wrote both scripts.

Bought this for the raven, the other I didn't much care for. 2 movies for much less than one costs. Who doesn't like at least one vincent price film...it also has peter lorre, boris karlof, and a young jack nichelson (the shining, easy rider, etc). Well worth it to me. Not really a horror film, more of campy comedy set in a horror setting.

Both films are screamingly funny. I was pleasantly surprised how humorous COMedy of terrors is, basil rathbone steals show with some lines that will have u howling with laughter. Mr price is a little hammy & disappointing in this 1. I give (comedy)3 stars. The raven 5 stars. Karloff, price, lorre, all deliciously jovial performances under Roger Cormans direction. Lorre gets best lines. Nicholson has a role, jack ,of course. Just a great effort all thru running time of film. Bravo!!!I
