Our city, every year, has "one book one city" and this book was this year's 2009 winner. That is why I chose to read it. I am so glad I did.......This was a remarkable story of the people involved in the making or saving of this "one-of-a-kind" Haggadah, a Jewish religious book but with Christian illustrations. Each story was unique and quite moving and was very compelling reading. I will probably read it again because it is that good. This was a very intelligent and well researched book and I felt like "I was there" for each period. Boy, do I appreciate modern times after reading of the hardships of earlier times. I highly recommend this book. The author Geraldine Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her book MARCH, about the father of LITTLE WOMEN......"murderaday"Read full review
Well written "What if" knovel by Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks. Brooks traces the journey of the Sarajevo Haggadah from its origins in Spain to the war ravaged town of Sarajevo. Inspired by the mariculous story of Sarajevo Haggadah, Brooks creates an adventure over several centuries. The chief component of the story is how the book is created and hidden from those who would destroy it as a piece Jewish culture. Along the way, the reader is exposed to the people who touched the book and how the book changed them. A rare-book expert, the sefer who created it, the Catholic priest who saved it from buring and the museum curator who kept it from the hands of the Nazi's. Reading this book will make you next want to get a facsimile copy of the Haggadah to see its beauty.Read full review
I strongly recommend this book and the work of Geraldine Brooks in general. She won the Pulitzer for "March" which is set in the civil war. I found these books most readable, interesting, ranging over the gamut of human emotions, while informing the reader about history and transporting the reader to different periods. Brooks latest book is coming out in May and is called "Caleb's Crossing" about the first Native American to attend Harvard and is set on Martha's Vineyard, again with the exciting elements of romance, civil and human rights issues set in authentic historic scenes. Brooks is a native of Australia, educated at Sydney University and an accomplished and courageous international journalist. She has come lately to motherhood and lives in USA with her husband the journalist Tony Horwitz.Read full review
