Actually, contrary to one review, I believe these ARE indeed waterproof! I have had mine in a TOTAL monsoon-type downpour, with no damage whatsoever. That said, I still have to give this unit a "below average" rating, as compared to what is available today. The copy I have is frightfully slow to acquire a lock, and quite often loses lock entirely if there is the slightest canopy of trees overhead, or if you are down in a ravine...the antenna just does not seem very sensitive. Also, this GPS is NOT WAAS enabled, so is not all that accurate. It can get you to within 100' or so of a location, but that is about it...if you require more accuracy, look elsewhere. On the other hand: a positive: these units can often be acquired used for a very modest cost. (like around $50)
The price of these older gps units is great. I use this unit for navigating in back country many miles from roads or marked trails. I must admit that I use the unit as more of a reasurance of my positions becuase of my years of back country experiences. The unit has not failed to hook up and navigate when I've needed it most. I've used it to take me back to spots that I needed to find again. Personally I feel no need to spend the money on a new unit when I can do the same thing with this one. In its day it was considered the best thing going, well it still does what it used to do!

We bought this new back in the day for hiking in an unmapped area of a state park. It never let us down, always connecting and being right on target. It is not cumbersome and you can hook it onto your belt or waistband where it is easy to grab, great instruction manual too. There is an altimeter too. Highly recommend!
