Carandiru is the name of the prison the movie mostly takes place in. It is also the prison in which over 100 inmates were brutally gunned down by riot police in 1992. This gruesome event in human history inspired the production of this movie and is masterfully reenacted by the producers. You will cry, laugh, gasp, and maybe even get cross-eyed while seeing this movie... It touches so many aspects of human nature in different ways, and illustrates the harsh, unbearable, unbelievable, disgusting way of prison life. This movie is an action-packed thriller and drama as well. It chronicles the individual histories of inmates and details the reasons for which they wound up in the ungodly Carandiru prison, while keeping track of the progression of events that preceded the inexplicable climax of the film. Very Good Brazilian Movie. Based in a true story. Shows what really happend inside Brazilian jails and how agressive were the cops when they had to invade the jail after an in-mates fight. Show how they handle with HIV and Tuberculosis inside the Biggest Jail Complex in Latin America. It was a gift to a friend in Canada and all the shipment work was well done. I would recomend to everybody. Great value for the money. Thanks a lot!
I truly loved this movie. It is wonderfully written and produced. I would recommend this movie to anyone. You have to watch it to truly understand the full scope of the movie. It is more than just a prison drama or a violent epic. You can see how much thought was put into every scene and storyline. True attention to detail. Don't pass up this movie, you'll regret it.
True story-haunting. Amazing how soon it was delivered and I could not believe it was not new-perfect condition. I think it is important if you can not travel to view good foreign films such as Carandiru to get a different perspective of your own life.
