The comeback film by Director Francis Ford Capolla, and his superior talents shine through in this unusual story. Based on the novel by Romanian Mircea Eliade, the beginning of this film begins around 1938, the rumblings of World War II are threatening Romania's existence; the foregone conclusion to everyone around that Hitler is going to be a serious problem. Tim Roth is Dominic Matei, 70 years old, a professor of language( linguistics), is struck by lightning, and should have died. However, he recovers, and discovers that he is turning younger and youthful again. He develops advanced powers as the next descendants of a superior Homo Sapiens race, and then the Nazis find about this, and want to capture him to experiment on him. In the meantime, after the end of the War, Dominic meets Veronica, played by actress Alexandra Maria Lara, who is very similar to Laura, Dominic's love lost about 60 years ago. The role by Tim Roth is a difficult one, to portray many complexities can be difficult. Veronica's stunning beauty is a sight to behold, and she also displays emotions with just her looking at Dominic, and is perfect for that role. Any film that has Coppola behind it is going to have stunning imagery, and paced well.Read full review
I was recommended this movie by a friend who enjoys philosophy. It's a long movie (over two hours) and will not be everyone's cup of tea but I loved it. Francis Ford Coppola has made a fascinating meditation on time, sapce and reality in which a Romanian professor who is struck by lightning regresses backwards in time, becoming younger and eventually becoming super-intelligent. He has a double (effectively, his evil twin) who communicates with him supernaturally. He also meets a woman who regresses back in time via speaking different ancient languages and undergoing the experiences of an ancient Indian woman and an ancient Egyptian. Coppola's framing of the scenes is unusal and poetic, with upside down camera shots in places. Tim Roth as the professor is brilliant (though a bit hard to engage with as a character) and Alexandra Maria Lara is beautiful as well as playing her role superbly. Add to this a sumptuous soundtrack and this is a feast for the senses; although you will have to be patient with the story, which unfolds very slowly. If you enjoy a good art movie this is definitely one to be savoured.Read full review

An odd film only to be viewed if you have interest in the work of Francis Ford Coppola. Not one of his best. But we have Apocalypse Now and The Godfather 123. Amen
