This is a great, very readable version of the thirteenth century epic about a Mandingo warrior-king. The second edition (2006), however, includes an introductory section of cultural context information which I wish my copy had. The story is exactly the same in both editions, the first edition just lacks those rather valuable pages which breifly outline relevant religious, political, and social customs.
I had to purchase this book for an African History class. The story was cute and easy to follow, and it provided geographical information that helped me in my studies.
